Yes my dd was born in april 2003 and I found out about this at the time we eventually recieved £1049 back the thing was at the time they made it sound like this was instead of normal monthly child tax credit and it was only a year later we found out it wasn't so we ended up on missing a whole years tax credit anyway!

how did you go about applying for it?

and how did you know you were entitled to it?

I don't want to go through a company to apply as they take a whack of commission, I'd rather do it myself but I don't know where to start!

You can get a refund if THEY have make a mistake ie they have overpaid you in year1, realized it and started to decrease your paiement to compensate for it. If the mistake is their, then they should ask for the momeny back and therefore you can ask for a refund.
Hope this clear enough.
Not sure how to claim for it as I learnt about it too late

I'd heard about this after seeing it on the internet. I think it relates to the very first year they brought in working families tax credits (I'm not sure if it was called that then) in about 1999. I really begrudged losing some of it in this company's commission tho so I just wrote to my tax office directly & they gave me a refund.

Kath, can you give me an idea of what you wrote?

Children's tax credit was given through your tax code for 2001-02 and 2002-03. It's not money but a tax allowance. It can only be claimed by one of a couple, and if one of you pays 40% tax it gets reduced and has to be claimed by that partner. If you didn't get it at the time, write to your tax office (ask your pay office which one) and tell them you want to claim, give your and your partners national insurance numbers and the date of birth of the youngest child. (if the youngest was born between April 2002 and April 2003 give the eldest child's dob as well).

You've got until 31/1/08 to claim for 2001-2002 and until 31/1/09 to claim for 2002-03.

Sorry, might be being a bit dim here and missing something but can you not just telephone the inland revenue and ask them?
