Here we are! Can't be bothered to think of an exciting title, sorry Blush

I Know just what you mean Burma.
My beloved dad died very suddenly last year at just 67.
It's a real wake up call isn't it?

JugglingFromHereToThere · 03/03/2014 07:33

Can I join you?
Will be back later to tell all, but just catching you whilst you're in active convos.

Badvoc · 03/03/2014 07:45

Hey juggling!

Possiblyorange · 03/03/2014 10:05

I've just joined my local Facebook selling group, am a bit nervous about putting things on there! Seems an awful lot less hassle than eBay, but not sure if smaller things will go on there, like kids toys or clothes. I'm guessing it's better for big things?

Mum2Fergus · 03/03/2014 10:13

Hi Juggling, welcome Smile

Orange, FB selling pages are fab...I posted last night about DPs old car going for £400...through FB. £50 for iPod last week, FB. Go for it Grin

Morning all, so major rework of finances this morning in light of picking up replacement car on Sat...but all things considered I'm quite happy with situation. Full repayment and closure of CC1 is only a month and a half over original target. Only a month if I really tighten the food budget between now and end April...so off to review meal plans!

Happy Monday people Grin

Possiblyorange · 03/03/2014 11:40

Good to hear mum2fergus. I have listed a couple of small bits on ebay this morning but think I'll try the FB group for the (never used, insanely expensive wedding gift) pressure cooker and a couple of other bigger bits.

Mum2Fergus · 03/03/2014 12:28

Oooh pressure cooker, if you were closer Id take that off your hands lol ...

TalkinPeace · 03/03/2014 12:43

The thing about getting out of debt is that it has lots of strands .....

"Spend less" is meaningless ... you have to redefine what is essential, what is useful and what is just fripperies
and triage everything you spend
decluttering helps - as you get to the back of the cupboard and think
" why on earth did I buy that when I've never used it, AND I put it on a card so am still paying for it "

priorities and review

also, regrets about the past.
They are done. They might have been bad decisions, use them to guide you forwards. You cannot change them.
You have to start from where you are not where you might have been.

As I said at the end of the last thread, getting out of debt is a lot like losing weight

  • you have to want to do it for yourself
  • there will never be a return to the old normal
  • it impacts on every part of your life and mindset

but its GREAT when you succeed.

Badvoc · 03/03/2014 13:48

I have stuff to get rid of - as talk says stuff I bought which now sits at the back of a cupboard. Madness.
Am giving up Amazon eBay for lent - am genuinely shocked how much I spent in feb.
Am going to talk to dh tonight wrt cc debt and paying a chunk off.

MissAnnersleyismyhero · 03/03/2014 14:21

TIP absolutely this!

I look at the stuff I have de-cluttered since our move, at old xmas and birthday "must-haves" and think WHY?!? None of it is worth being debt for... in fact no possession or item is worth being in debt for.

I've sold stuff on eBay for 1/10th of what I have paid for it... but I am looking resolutely forward. New lifestyle, have completely changed my spending habits (I joined the no new clothes thread feeling apprehensive whether I could do 2-3 months and haven't even been tempted to buy clothes yet).

DH is slowly coming on board, he's far too relaxed about debt and money and tends not to be focused but he would do anything to make me happy so that's keeping him on track and hopefully when he sees the benefits of it (no payments, more savings, house deposit etc) he will be more on board.

JugglingFromHereToThere · 03/03/2014 14:28

Thanks for the welcome.
I have max'd out on my overdraft and have moderate CC debt, possibly we should consider a personal loan or a re-mortgage?
DH hopeless about discussing finances with me without getting angry.
Seems it's my job (by de-fault) to make sure everything balances, and since I lost my job and DC hit teenage years it just doesn't magically balance all on it's own! There's a surprise! Hmm
Getting a new P/T job, and/or chasing up my zero hours contract are priorities for spring.
Only cut back I can think of ATM is DC could take packed lunch to school - they've always had school dinners up to now.
Possibly we could be more aware of car journeys and hopefully reduce petrol expenditure?

Badvoc · 03/03/2014 15:39

Juggling..are your kids primary? Free school meals coming in soon!
I have also thought of re mortgaging to pay off the cc....wouldn't make much difference to the payments.
Hmmm....

Possiblyorange · 03/03/2014 15:49

Have just ordered some cheap birthday cards from here as part of my mission to make the upcoming excess of birthdays as cheap as possible. Quite a few half decent ones in the clearance section, and even the 'nice' cards start at quite reasonable prices, plus no UK shipping and 10% off over £25. I've stocked up for ages for the princely sum of £23 after the discount.

I've just spent a satisfying half hour going through last month's budget/spends and highlighting areas we need to be more careful on this month - will go through it at tonight's family meeting (I am already loving these, inspired by this post. Great for getting the DCs on board with money saving so far).

Juggling personal loan/remortgage can work, but something like 70% of people who consolidate their debts just run up the debts again and have the loan on top of the new debts, so beware if you're thinking of doing it! I would be sitting down and telling your DH to get a grips you can discuss it properly with him - it's got to be about a million times harder to tackle any sort of debt without the whole family on board. if you want cutback ideas, feel free to post a summary of your monthly outgoings on here and everyone will help you work out the biggest/easiest cuts to make. Do you have a budget?

I have £60 in my paypal account, but I am waiting until it has grown a little more or I really need it (my income from my second, tiny, business goes into Paypal). I am basically a bit lazy and find having about £20 in my current account keeps me really motivated to try to earn more (through self employment or eBaying stuff), whereas as soon as I have some breathing space I slack off a bit. Gosh, that's quite lame actually Blush. At least I know the solution though - trick myself into thinking I'm even more spectacularly poor than i actually am.

Thebluedog · 03/03/2014 17:53

Wow.... I have a loan with lloyds and due to SMP I was looking at taking a payment holiday, as I noticed I was eligible to do this in the terms. However if I did take a payment holiday for one month, they'd charge me over 1700 quid in additional interest ShockShock that's pretty shocking! I thought with them being a reputable company and not one of these payday lenders rye wouldn't use it as a licence to print money.

We are going to see if we can manage to hang in there without the payment holiday as I really can't see how being an additional 1700 quid worse off, for an extra 550 quid for one month.

themoneyone · 03/03/2014 18:51

That is ridiculous bluedog. Any chance you can get the money elsewhere?

NSD here today, and first (BIN) item sold on ebay. A drop in the ocean, but every little helps, right?

Possiblyorange · 03/03/2014 20:09

Well done themoneyone. I debated doing some BINs when I listed today, but have no idea what the stuff is likely to reach and couldn't be bothered to search completed listings - I have listed for 10 days for the bare minimum I can be bothered to package the things up for.

thebluedog that sucks, can you suck up the £550 elsewhere at all?

Ooh, my Paypal balance is up to £85. Only another £2,688 and we'll break even this month instead of needing the credit card. A girl can dream, right? Grin

TalkinPeace · 03/03/2014 21:24

thebluedog
those loan terms are OUTRAGEOUS
can you take the papers to the CAB to check that you've read it right
and if you have, formal complaint under "unfair terms" right away
it does not have PPI attached to it as well does it Wink

Mum2Fergus · 03/03/2014 22:19

BlueDog, Id get that figure double checked and confirmed. I have loan with same and have just checked my paperwork and cannot see how it tallies up...

ellietrying · 04/03/2014 07:23

Spent £28 yesterday but will get £25 of that paid back, probably today.

Hoping for a NSD today. Will sit down tonight and check my accounts/budgets are ok. 1/4 of the way through the month so hopefully am on track still!

Nerfmother · 04/03/2014 07:40

Taking something back today so should get 20 quid in the account for that. Have to pay school after care club but been offered overtime.
Seem to be ok this month and just been looking online and I can overpay my loan without penalty (it's a Lloyd's one too, sorry it doesn't seem to work the other way) so am going to start paying an extra 50 quid a month.

OP posts:
MissAnnersleyismyhero · 04/03/2014 08:07

NSD yesterday.

"Unexpected" expenses coming up/needing to be paid this month - £100 for dental treatment, £140 for travel home to see family after a bit of a crisis.

This will eat into my debt-paying principal, but I will list stuff on eBay this weekend to try and recoup some of it, and we are having a car boot in March too.

Also trying to trim groceries budget as much as poss, any left over can re-balance the extra expenses. Aldi is my friend!

CC1 should still be completely paid off on 25 March (next pay day) and a small sum more off CC2. DH is possibly being paid for freelance work he did in March which would be enough to clear CC2 and close it, I am trying not to get my hopes up.

Possiblyorange · 04/03/2014 08:16

Dh had to have a very long and boring argument with British Gas yesterday to sort out our £75 refund that they owe us. Given that they have just been on the news stating they are trying to give back £400m to customers in exactly our situation, it's a bit galling! Cheque is apparently in the post though I'll believe it when I see it.

Today's mission: list two more things on evilBay.

Thebluedog · 04/03/2014 09:08

I think I'm going to ring them. You can see if you are eligible l online, which is what I did, and as soon as I saw the amount if interest I cancelled it.

We could probably suck it up and continue to pay the loan during the SMP, but it really would be 'hand to mouth' for the next 4 months with no emergency money.

If it is 1700 quid I think I will take it to someone as I think that's an outrageous amount. Even if we choose to continue to pay it, out I principal I feel like taking it further.

Unfort no ppi Wink

2whippetsnobed · 04/03/2014 11:35

Hi everyone. I've had a quick read up of this thread because we are massively in debt and only just starting to get to grips with it. I need to get dh on board asap.
Really need some support and encouragement too.

pixiestix · 04/03/2014 12:26

Finally managed to do my end of month breakdown. We managed to pay 2.75% off the total debt this month, and £113 less cash spent than in January. All our envelope spends were less than Jan, except for the baby prep which understandably went through the roof. I was expecting a really, really hard month so overall I am quite pleased, BUT our "luxury" spends - DVDs, books, takeaways - were £30 in January and in February they were £145 Shock I know its from being hugely pregnant and exhausted and needing a quick fix to feed or entertain our toddler but that is £145 that we really could have done with paying off the credit card, or overpaying the council tax. So a bit cross with myself on that score.
March is going to be tricky as DHs pay will be halved by the two weeks paternity leave but I'm going to aim to pay the minimum amounts on the credit cards and to not spend on them at all, rather than paying off a bigger sum and then running out of cash halfway through the month. Worst case scenario is to pay the minimums and then end up using the bloody things anyway. We shall see.
20 days until C-section if the baby doesn't arrive before then! Shock Grin
