Here we are! Can't be bothered to think of an exciting title, sorry Blush

Just realised the Tescos TV for £169 deal runs out on the 19th when it goes up to £209. Is that a good deal for a 32" does anyone know? I have a samsung in the lounge but not too fussed about brand name for 2nd TV as long as it works!

NSD for me today, apart from giving DS1 £5 spending money for school trip tomorrow Grin

MissAnnersleyismyhero · 17/03/2014 07:28

8 more days until payday... I can't wait to get another lump sum paid off the debt. DH's payday is nearer to the end of the month, and he should be getting paid for some overtime and freelance stuff as well as his basic wage.

Some clients are really messing him around and trying to bounce him to payroll, payroll then claim not to have authorization from that department etc and I am losing patience. He's applying for a job which will be double his current salary and mean he doesn't need to do all this freelance stuff to survive, I really hope he gets it.

Possiblyorange · 17/03/2014 08:11

Demented DH's pay day can vary quite a lot (it's something stupid like the fourth thursday of the month) but I just got in the habit of assigning for the month, then reassigning on the 1st of the month for the remainder (majority) of the unspent salary. It only took a couple of months and everything made sense. The pay days are almost irrelevant anyway, as you budget for what's there and what needs to come out before you're paid again (although I have to say I budget for everything and then watch the massive red 'over budget' number reduce down to zero as pay etc comes in). And yes, I had to do some forum searching to sort out the dropbox thing, it was less simple than I expected. Well worth it though!

Ishe no idea about the TV, sorry. Can you google for reviews etc? I would be inclined to wait if it means sticking it on a CC though, it's probably good discipline to get in the habit of not buying on credit!

Missannersley what a nightmare re your DH's pay. Fingers crossed for the new, better job.

I am feeling really pleased as our rent came out this morning and we still have £271 before the overdraft limit, which means we are less close to the bone than I was expecting to be. I only have 10 days to grow that buffer a bit more before DC3 appears, but I'll do my best!

ishesingle · 17/03/2014 09:49

Thanks possibly, I have the money though - ynab says so! Been saving my ebay and Amazon sales money for a while. Just waiting for stupid music magpie money to clear and I'll have £190 towards new TV (it's been over a month - they are sooooo slow!)

puffylovett · 17/03/2014 09:57

Morning all! I got an unexpected commission payment of £76, so I'm going to pay off another £100 on cc1 - which takes it down to £800, down from 1900 since I started on this thread 2 months ago - yippee!

I've also been decorating, but rather then my usual f and b obsession, I have opted for a cheap white homebase Matt paint for the ceiling and chimney breast at 7.99 for 5 litres, and keeping the f and b for 2 walls. Have also reigned in my enthusiasm, and dp and I have agreed to wait till August to so the floor and door work that needs doing, giving us time to save 10 per week towards it. That is such a MASSIVE mind change for me, all thanks to you girls!! I'm also hopin DP will agree to laying a reclaimed parquet floor for us, saving us more money in the long run :)

TalkinPeace · 17/03/2014 14:12

puffy
well done on decorating within your means
it will be less pastel
but all paid for so that is a GOOD change in mindset

ishe
do you NEED another TV or just want another TV
how many hours will you NEED to watch it - or could you read a book and save the purchase price and the electricity

ishesingle · 17/03/2014 14:40

Ok, it is purchased. Final cost £151 due to some tesco vouchers I had which means there is still £46 left in the "ebay sales" pot. Need to buy a wall bracket but that is it. Entirely funded by selling things from around the house, some of which I might miss and most which I won't. 5 years after moving in and saying "I'll put a TV there", I will finally put a TV there! And in the nick of time as the old portable is making a high pitched background noise. Just need to borrow a decent drill now as it is a very solid wall!

Mum2Fergus · 17/03/2014 16:45

Afternoon all, NSD for me today...massive clean and clearout of upstairs rooms, pooped!

Hope to finally get bedroom decorated during week off in April...then I think garden is next on my list! Have made noted today of what I want to do and priced it up at B&Q...massive step change for me as Id usually pay someone to do it!

Nerfmother · 17/03/2014 18:51

Absolute nightmare today. Oven stopped working, repair estimated at 139 and the repair last year in warranty is only guaranteed til the end of the warranty period. So, it's 2.5 years old , cost 200 to buy, and has so far had the same fault twice.
I am tempted not to repair it , I've emailed head office, but it seems like a big risk.
Not sure what to do.
Plus kettle has also gone kaput (different electric circuit Grin) so will have to resort to dh buying wine on the way home. Have put all the oven stuff in the freezer.
Any ideas?

puffylovett · 17/03/2014 19:07

Neefmother - you could boil water in a saucepan for a bit Wink

I would be emailing requesting a refund - as not fit for purpose. Something like that should last l

puffylovett · 17/03/2014 19:11

Oops!

Longer than 2 years! Shocking!

Mum2fergus - yay, to decorating and pricing things up beforehand - I've been doing the same. Next on my list is our foul downstairs loo which stinks of wee (3 boys Hmm), I've been pricing up vinyl tiles and working out the most cost effective way to get the look I want. It's quite good fun actually!
Thanks talkinpeace that's totally true. ROFL at reading a book being cheaper!!

Is it just me or is there a real air of spring cleaning on this thread at the moment?

dementedma · 17/03/2014 19:44

Got to decorate the kitchen this easter holiday, and need new bathroom door. One which locks and doesn't have a bloody great hole in ideally.at the moment am on course to have money left over when payday comes around....a week to go and still got money in the bank. Unheard of! Mustn't let dh blow it before then.

Nerfmother · 17/03/2014 20:20

Yup thinking saucepan. I am actually not prepared to just spend money. I am sooo determined for this debt to go. We've agreed tonight to see what beko head office say and to cancel the paid for repair.
I'd rather be creative with pasta, mash, frozen jkts than pay to have it repaired again.

Extra excited for pay day (20th) this month...going to repay CC1 in full and close the account Smile

Nerfmother · 17/03/2014 21:28

Hooray!!!!!!!

ishesingle · 17/03/2014 22:56

Hmm, DS2 has just asked for cinema trip for him and 4 friends for his birthday plus Pizza Hut take away at home. Was hoping to get away with home made pizza and a DVD sleepover! But he doesn't ask for very much and I hope his Dad will go halves. It's right before my payday, unfortunately Hmm

MissAnnersleyismyhero · 17/03/2014 23:49

Hmmm nerf I reckon the fact that it's the same fault should mean they have to replace it - because it shows the repair didn't work//the same fault is ongoing and was reported before the warranty was up. This happened to me with a laptop and I ended up with a shiny new one!

Nerfmother · 18/03/2014 06:51

Isshesingle is he old enough to be told no? I realised I kept justifying expenditure, and there was always a good reason in my head, but in trying to stop it. A sleepover lasts longer?

OP posts:
Nerfmother · 18/03/2014 06:52

Miss annersley, that's what I think .
I'm also just going downstairs to boil water in a pan for tea!

OP posts:
themoneyone · 18/03/2014 07:47

Do you have any tesco vouchers that could pay for the cinema tickets ishe? And how about swapping take away for them making their own pizzas?

ishesingle · 18/03/2014 07:59

He could be told No, but he literally never asks for anything. Ever. He costs nothing! No clothes, doesn't go out because he meets his friends "online" or at the park, saved up birthday and Xmas money for a couple of years for his PC and his tablet, only hobby is programming. He doesn't even has pocket money because "nothing to spend it on". He's a quiet and undemanding boy. Seems mean to begrudge him a birthday treat when he hasn't asked for one for 3 years. I think it will be £80 (so £40 for my share). I suggested making pizzas but he wants Pizza Hut, the take away was the compromise (cheaper than eating in). I already have his main present and there is a little money left in my ynab gift category and a fair amount in groceries so think I can manage it. I do have money in holiday savings, Xmas, and my emergency fund categories so I won't be destitute! Am pleased he is bringing friends home to be honest, eldest does but DS2 keeps them away usually, I only know one of the ones he's invited.

themoneyone · 18/03/2014 08:08

In that case - go for it! He sounds lovely btw.

Nerfmother · 18/03/2014 08:54

I'd like one of those cost free children Grin

OP posts:
Possiblyorange · 18/03/2014 09:43

Ishesingle bless him, I'd be inclined to go for it too.

Mum2Fergus how satisfying to be able to close an account!

Puffy I keep thinking that when I've recovered from the whole birth thing I might try to redecorate a few rooms as cheaply as possible. It's a rental, but our landlord is v relaxed, and TBH the house is looking a little tatty. I'm handy with a sewing machine and I won't be looking at replacing floors or anything, so I'll probably set myself a teeny weeny budget for each room and see what I can do.

Nerf what a pain with the oven, I would be pushing for a free replacement on the basis that it shouldn't break twice in two years (can you start quoting sale of goods act at that?)

Fairly low spend week, just a couple of bits of felt to finish making DC2's birthday present (have bough a little saucepan set, and am going to make some felt food to go with it - mine will not look that good!). I also bought milk yesterday to make paneer with as there wasn't any in the shop. No idea what it will turn out like! Making veggie curry tonight and saag paneer to use up some of the acres of spinach in the freezer. May go utterly wild and make chapatis too - surely just basically flour and water dry fried?

SpanishLady · 18/03/2014 09:53

Morning all,

So after much discussion we decided to go for a loan option to tackle my debts.

We have paid off 2 credit cards ( main debt) and my overdraft - I have 2 smaller balances which we are transferring to a 0% interest card.

I am going to be debt free in 4 years time. Seems ages but at least now I have a goal to reach as opposed to having no plan and no ideas.

My dh is going to be checking my account from now on ( my request) as I know him watching me will put the fear of god in me.

He has been very calm but said it can't happen again and any big purchases ( over £50) we will discuss together and agree on.

I just feel embarrassed and foolish and ashamed but also like the weight of the world has been lifted off my shoulders for the moment anyway.

I am determined to change my mindset and live within my means going forwards.

We also need to do some decorating and will be doing it ourselves to save money but at least we will get it done so bravo to all those painting walls this Easter!
