Gas bill - how much????

A bill came to the house to the occupier for gas from Scottish gas for £9,700 or thereabouts for payment from 2006 to today. Why? We've been paying by direct debit since we lived here having our payments modified each year (£160 a month so not exactly underpaying). We switched recently to a fixed payment and had a final reading and we got money back from them (ie Scottish gas). Then this bill comes through saying to pay that amount before 24 feb. WTF????

obviously a huge accounting cock up. You know your next move - phone them. And if they won't budge, start escalating.

you will have records of your payments.

have you been submitting meter readings?
look at all of your old bills - do they have actual or estimated readings?
is the bill definitely for your meter number (go look at the meter)?
get all the paperwork and your facts together, check everything you can

and then phone them on monday, taking exact notes of time, names, duration, extension numbers EVERYTHING
