Allowances for 18+

Can anyone advise at what age they stopped giving their children an allowance.

DSC turns 18 this year and is in full-time education (at college), doesn't currently have a job.

Do most parents continue to provide an allowance whilst children are at college or is 18+ a cut off-point, to say even if your still at college its time to consider getting a (part-time) job to pay for your mobile and going out etc.

My gut says to continue giving an allowance whilst a child is still at college and end it the September after they leave. However continuing to give a child an allowance when there 19+ seems odd (to me!)...just looking for feedback...

I had an allowance until I finished university but my parents were comfortable at the time. I worked in the summers at university and did waitressing and bar work on Saturday nights whilst I was at school.

Ive had jobs since I was 15 (now 21++++) so never got an allowance, worked all thru uni etc.

We could probably afford to continue paying an allowance whilst they remained at college, but dc isn't interested in getting a job (of any sort) and I think it would give them more financial independence if they did.

Thank you for your feedback theres...something to think about

My parents gave me an allowance as long as they were still getting child benefit for me, but they said I could have it regardless of if I got a job or not so that I was much better off financially by finding something part time!

DS is 17 and we plan to continue giving an allowance while we get CB/CTC for him (probably until he is 20 due to the college he goes to). The CTC will easily cover the costs for us as it's quite a high rate due to him getting DLA.
