Insuring Car after moving from Ireland

Hi Can anyone help? Maybe someone has experience with this. We have an irish car, moved over in June, the insurance is up by the 15th of October, trying to register car as UK reg to tax it and get licence plates, DVLA are saying we need it insured first and the insurance companies are saying it needs to have a uk reg first. Very frustrating , any ideas?
thanks

DP did exactly this when he moved from NI to Jockland so will ask him process when he gets in...can't you continue insurance with existing company?

Just checked and he registered the vehicle here but kept the NI plates...had to go into Edinburgh office with ID/proof of ownership.

Have you checked DVLA website?
