Quick Maths help to sort out percentage of our bills!

DP and I have agreed to pay for a household refurbishment pro rata to our respective salary income.

My salary: £2697.34
His salary £2041.54

Total £4738.88

We are now trying to work out the respective percentages of our monthly total we each earn in order to work out the percentage we should each contribute to improvements!

Can anyone help? Thanks!

About 57 and 43 percent

About 57 and 43 percent

AgentProvocateur · 15/09/2013 12:57

Add the bills up. Divide by 47. Multiply by 20 for your share and 27 for his.

But really, you earn roughly in the same ballpark. Nit picking over 7/42s seems a bit OTT.

racmun · 15/09/2013 12:58

I divide each salary amount by the total and then multiply by 100

flummoxedlummox · 15/09/2013 12:58

You = 56.92%
Him = 43.08%

HouseholdBill · 15/09/2013 12:58

Thank you, CloudeBruxelles!

Can you show your workings Grin?

DP has worked out that as I get £656.16 more per month that is a third more so i should pay a third more towards refurb, but that doesn't feel quite right intuitively me to me.

In your version I would pay 57% of refurb costs and DP would pay 43%?

You divide each individual salary by the total

ilovepowerhoop · 15/09/2013 13:02

you divide each salary by the tital earned and multiply the answer by 100 to get the percentage e.g. 2697.34 /4738.88 x 100 is approx 53% and 2041.54/4738.88 x 100 is approx 47%

ilovepowerhoop · 15/09/2013 13:04

sorry I mean 57% and 43% got my numbers confused

HouseholdBill · 15/09/2013 13:08

Is the question that I am asking the right question to make a fair pro rata payment?

DP wants to know a) what is the % difference between our two salaries, and b) should I be paying that % extra towards the refurb costs?

ilovepowerhoop · 15/09/2013 13:26

but if you pay 57% and he pays 43% then you are paying 14% more which is roughly 30% of the 43% he is paying so you are taking your higher wage into account.

e.g if there was a cost of £4k you would pay £2280 and he would pay £1720. You would be paying about 30% more than him

ilovepowerhoop · 15/09/2013 13:30

I don't even know if that makes sense!

mrsminiverscharlady · 15/09/2013 13:41

You need to do it on net salaries because your personal tax and NI allowances will affect the percentage of your salaries that you pay in tax and NI, and thus the amount you actually take home iyswim.

HouseholdBill · 15/09/2013 17:40

MrsMiniver - yes it is net.

ilovepower - that makes sense!

Choosing colours will be a doddle compared to this...
