Recommendation for a Scottish lawyer?

My mum and dad's solicitor is retiring and the practice has also been taken over by a much larger practice.

Can anyone recommend someone for bog standard family stuff? Primarily will writing/inheritence stuff and maybe the occasional bit of property stuff (mum and dad co-own a piece of ground beside their house (a conversion), with a couple fot he toher resdient in the conversion to protect it from future development).

They are North Glasgow based.

Come to think of it, dh and I should probably be looking as weell, as we last used the same solicitor, and really should re-look at our wills (which at the mement are very simple DIY ones - but we always intended to do them "properly"). We are also Glasgow based.

Bump? Anyone?

I can recommend an Edinburgh-based lawyer - he's DH's stepdad's solicitor and he handled our house-buying etc. V on the straight and narrow (I think).
Does he/she have to be Glasgow-based?

prettybird · 01/05/2006 12:47

Not so much of an issue for me/dh (although I'd need to check with dh) although I think Mum & Dad would prefer to be able to pop in and see him/her if they needed to.

But I'll ask!

Prettybird, I work for a large Scottish firm which has a Private Client department. Being a large firm, we are probably not the cheapest around, but the team is very good and well able to do the sort of things you mention. We are in the City Centre of Glasgow (also Edinburgh) and if this sounds appropriate, I can CAT you and give you details.

We have a good lawyer, but again Edinburgh based. Maybe even the same one as Pruni's....

prettybird · 01/05/2006 14:09

If there is anyone within the department that yuo could recommend Kikidee that might be of interest. I think they liked the fact that they had developed a personal relationship with thier last lawyer ( the practice was taken over by Tods Murray). Not sure if what they are are looking for is feasible in today's world - but my own exposure to Scottish legal practice on a personal basis is limited to the time we bought our house, 7 years ago (... and we used my mum and dad's lawyers, on the basis of personal recommendation! :))

We've got plenty of contacts at the corporate level in McLay Murray and Spens (espcially dh), but not really in the area of things that mum & dad are looking for.

Ours is very much like that prettybird- I know it's of no real use to your parents, but just wanted to say that such things do still exist!

kikidee · 01/05/2006 14:33

Prettybird, that's the one! You can either ask your corporate contacts to refer you to someone or I can give you a name. The sort of relationship that you describe definitely still exists and it's just a matter of finding someone that you like and trust.

prettybird · 01/05/2006 14:51

Kikidee - I'll CAT you anyway (I'd been meaning to subscribe, so that I could try and find out what Toothache was up to, so it was a good excuse to get around to it!).

We've got a friend who works at Maclay's - you might know her (... but from memory, her kids are older than yours, so it can't be you Grin)

Did you ever get to go to the RSA Private View? Dh used to get an invite and it was a great evening (we even bought two paintings one year).

For "bog standard family stuff" (actually, that's all we've ever had) we've used a few firms, but I think the best was Miller Jackson in Lenzie. I can't remember the woman's name that we dealt with though. Reasonable prices too.

prettybird · 01/05/2006 15:59

.... Lenzie is not far from Mum and Dad, so that might be of interest to them.

Thnaks for the suggestions received so far. Word of mouth is always best! :)

Any others?

Smeone at work suggested I also ask my own company's legal depratment, to see if there is anyone they'd recommend.
