When should I apply for Maternity Allowance?

I'm 31+3 Weeks pregnant and have planning start my maternity leave at 38 Weeks.

I have been employed in my current job since August but not long enough to claim SMP although I think I am eligible for MA (atleast I bloody hope so :o).

I have my MATB1 from midwife but when should I apply, I'm not sure whether I have to wait until maternity leave starts or if I can do so before hand.

As you can tell I'm clueless so any information our advice on how to go about claiming would be much appreciated :)

You need to give 28 days notice to your employer of your intention to take maternity leave along with the form.

Good luck & enjoy your maternity leave.

You can apply from 26 weeks - www.gov.uk/maternity-allowance/overview. Form is at the link. You'll need proof of your income, your MATB1 and evidence if your employers refusal to cover SMP.
