Uniform Tax Rebate

has anyone tried this? I'm trying persuade my mum to do this, but she works part-time at a Pre-school and doesn't think she'll be eligible, her uniform is a tabard which she wears the majority of the time and launders etc herself.
Any advice, happily received!

If you read this link on Tax Relief for Specialist Clothing or Tools she may be able to claim an amount for laundering her uniform. She can contact HMRC by phone or letter.

What if you don't earn enough to pay tax?
I work part time in a day nursery and have only paid tax twice (last year I paid £10 tax). I doubt it would help me, as they keep raising the tax threshold to keep me out of the tax systemGrin.

I wondered about this for dh (work t-shirt/shirt) but whether it was more hassle than it was worth.

likelucklove · 17/05/2012 08:52

I did it and only took 10 minutes. However, I'm a student so only paid tax one out of the three years, but I still got £50 back! I'd say do it, if you lose a bit of time so be it!

I hand a full work uniform too, which is blazers, shirts, skirts and trousers.

I don't know if you can claim tax relief if you don't pay tax but it's got to be worth a phone-call.

I did this, they didn't work out the 6 years as I was expecting but me and DH still got a cheque each for £33.94, ok not massive but certainly not bad for one stamp each :)

Thanks for replies, sounds like it's worth it, Ratbag you did do well, mum is skint so everything helps.

Definitely worth doing, did it for H and got a nice bit back.

If you not pay tax you won't be able to claim any money back though.
