Tax credit overpayment....??

This time last year we got a letter saying they had overpaid us. We didn't dispute it, as we assumed they were correct. As a result we got NO tax credits(child tax credits) for the year as they said this is how they would recover payment. I now have a letter saying they overpaid us for the year ending April 2011. Is this correct? Do we owe them more?

To repay over 12 months would be over £80 a month that we just don't have. Just as we had literally gotten on our feet too.

I will of course need to phone them, but the fact that we literally "paid" them over 2000k last year by not taking tax credits, leaves me thinking this must be a mistake. They agreed to not pay us tax credits and take that money as payment instead. .....not sure what I am asking, just wondered if anyone has been in a similar situation. Can they be wrong??

They may be wrong but it's also possible that the previous overpayment still hasn't been paid off. You need to ring them to check.

Yes that's what I thought. I stupidly didn't keep last years letter so not sure of the actual amount owed from last year.will call them. Thanks!
