Has anyone threatened to cancel Virgin media to get a better deal?

I think we're paying way too much for our broadband + phone + tv package considering the deals around but dh doesn't want to leave as their broadband is the best (apparentely....). So I want to threaten to cancel and actually be put through to the cancelation team, but don't want to take it through.

So my question is, can I cancel and then change my mind if they don't give me a better deal? Will I have time to think about it or will my cancelation be final? And how likely are they to actually give me a better deal?

TIA everyone

I called to cancel recently and got what I wanted - upgraded broadband, engineers round to refit the router that they wanted to charge us £90 for even though they put in wrong place.. call cancel team directly to say you are thinking of it and want to know the procedure - this gives them time to make you an offer and means you do not push the button until you are ready

Thanks ZZMum.
If I call to cancel and they call my bluff, how far can I take it? Anyone knows?

Thanks!

They called me the day before they were due to cut me off. This was a few years ago though.

Yes, I have. They gave me the deal I wanted.

Also have friends who told them they were canceling cos they'd found a much better deal elsewhere. VM wouldn't match it so they went through with canceling. They were phoned back a few days later with a cheaper offer Wink.

Yes. My monthly bill crept up to £41 a month and was meant to be paying about £28. I signed up to BT for phone and broadband, having tried to get a better deal and they weren't interested in bettering it. The forms must have gone through as I suddenly got a call from Virgin retention offering to better my BT deal by £5 a month (£25), and I explained the other reason I had chosen BT was I got 0845 numbers free and the fastest broadband, so they also gave me that. However, as typical of Virgin the made a real balls-up of 'transferring' the account (why did they need to??) and cut my broadband off for 48hrs with no notice. However, once past dealing with their usual incompetence (they couldn't get the paperwork right wither) I am getting what I've paid for.

However, they are inept and next time will swap to BT who in every respect appear to be more efficient.

Thank you all. I think I'll have to be brave and take it through!

How long is the cancelation period, ie, from when you give them notice and you're actually cut off?

A new supplier dovetails the service so in theory no cut off

FridayOLeary · 30/04/2012 16:10

My brother has - they let him cancel Wink

I tried it, and they very nicely let me have less in my package for less money Hmm. In the end, I signed with BT. And only then about 2 days before the switch was due, they phoned and begged... I said that unless they gave me a V+box, TV XL, free phone calls, new wifi router and huge broadband for whatever BT were offering it for, I wasn't interested. So they did Grin

LaCerbiatta · 30/04/2012 16:49

So it looks like I may have to really take it through until the end and even sign up with another provider so there's no break in service.

It'll have to be done... Our bill is always between £70 and £100 and we don't have any + box or HD or anything like that.... :(

Should have added that we call abroad a fair amount but their plans for international calls are rubbish!

So those of you who have BT for phone and broadband have sky for TV? Or does Sky do phone and bb as well?
