Tax code BR

I've had a tax notice today saying my tax has been calculated as basic rate (20%). I only work one day a week so didn't think I'd need to pay that much. Is it likely to be right and if not, do I just wait for it to be sorted out or can I do anything about it? Thanks.

Ring up the tax office or speak to your employer.

Is it a new job? If your P46 hasn't been processed then you would be put on BR as it would be assumed you still had the other job. Or if it is an additional job and you want to split your personal allowance across more than one job you need to let HMRC know

Only job. Same payroll (county council) as last job, with a few month in between.

You need to call them really.

I had been in the same job (part time) for 2 years and they randomly changed my tax code to BR which meant I was paying something like 20% on all my income with no personal tax allowance! It was an error at their end so they had to change it back and I got a tax rebate.

You need to call them. I had this recently, so called them to cry down the phone at them and it turned out that an employer I had over a year ago hadn't bothered to send the necessary paperwork to say that I no longer worked there Hmm

Most likely it is your employer being lazy - they probably should have asked you to complete and sign a P46 form. Call them and ask them why they have done this: it should sort itself out once you are on the correct code.
