Warning re. HSBC mortgages

I'm in the middle of (trying to) move house, and our experience with HSBC has been nothing short of traumatic. I am warning anyone who will listen NOT to get a mortgage with HSBC.
Since the beginning of this year, HSBC have introduced a panel of solicitors who do their conveyancing work. The main one is Countrywide, who are now inundated with HSBC's cases and are clearly drowning. The buyer is still permitted to appoint their own solicitor, but everything they do has to be checked and approved by Countrywide... which takes forever. As an example, we sent our 'pre exchange pack' to Countrywide 6 days ago, which had been painstakingly put together by our solicitor to meet Countrywide's quite ridiculous checklist. Their stipulated turnaround time is 48 hours, but we have still heard nothing. Everyone in our chain is waiting for us, and the worst part is that NO ONE can help me - HSBC are even saying they can't contact Countrywide directly.
I won't go on about the details but the service is shocking - worse than anything I've ever experienced. There are other stories all over the internet/ complaints on Twitter etc. Until they change their policy, avoid them at all costs.

Wow - thanks for that Banana.

It's a bloody nightmare moving house as it is.

I've seen another thread along very similar lines re HSBC (with the last couple of months, I think) - might be worth you having a search.

Hassled · 17/04/2012 16:47

within, sorry.

I saw another thread about this, and also heard something in RL where someone lost out on a house because of unreasonable delays.

Glittertwins · 17/04/2012 20:25

Yes, this thread was in AIBU.
We renegotiated our mortgages with them last month and they totally messed it up. Fortunately we didn't need the solicitors as we were existing borrowers. They did have some very good rates though.

I agree, we are having a nightmare with HSBC, on what should be a straight forward mortgage. Vendor wants to sell, we want to buy, finances not an issue at all, but they keep coming up with extra surveys and undertakings that no other bank wants. Absolute nightmare, avoid like the plague.

Thanks for this. I guess this will cover firstdirect as well? Sad

Complaint to the Law Society about the conduct of your solicitor. I assume you could also comPlain to the FSA about the conduct of HSBC.
