Can any company with a credid card machine put money ON to your card?

I've just rung the card company as I'm waiting for a 'refund' to go onto my card. I paid the company with cash but they agreed a refund and said they would put it onto my card and took all the details. The woman at the card company has just told me that unless the original transaction was taken from the card, they cannot refund money onto the card. However her English was limited to say the least (that's a whole other thread!!)

Does anyone know for sure?

Or even a credit card machine!

Usually the refund is made the way the transaction was paid for - you should get cash as the refund. Usually a refund back onto a card would take the same amount of time it would to come off it

the rules are strict and so if you pay with a crdeit or debit card then you may have a refund paid onto the original payment card only

you cannot have a refund paid on to a card if the transaction was cash

Really? So there's no way he could have put the money onto the card then? He took the card number, my name and the security number. It was a private 4d babyscan company, not a shop or anything... I'm worried now!!

If you break the rules then you can have your merchant account closed, but possibly the account provider wouldn't notice a breach

I wouldn't do it

Incidentally if you do make a purchase with a card and you want a refund there is no reason why it can't be processed in real time, although companies will argue this and say it can't be done for 14 days or whatever it's baloney

zippitippitoes · 09/02/2006 10:26

that is the scan people are breaking the rules

if they don't have a shop where did the transaction take place?

zephyrcat · 09/02/2006 10:30

He had a card machine thingy in the office - I didn't have the card at the time I booked the appointment so we paid cash on the day. When the scan didn't work he seemed very reluctant to be seen to be giving someone their money back (it was in a doctors waiting room with other people waiting for scans) and asked us to ring the next day, which dp did, and he was apparently quite happy to give us a refund and asked for the card details. He knew we paid cash as it was only 2 days before....do you think dp needs to go there and ask for the cash back?

I would expect the cash myself especially if I'd only just given it to him

I assume he was trustworthy? I might be worried about him making himself a payment with the card

zephyrcat · 09/02/2006 10:55

I assume he was! It's a proper company and is based within a doctor's surgery. It's only a 200.00 limit card and that's what the refund is for which is why I didn't mind him putting it on there as it will pay the whole card off - one less card bill to worry about! It's more the inconvenience of it all - after the grief at the scan I can't be doing with all this for a refund as well - I just need to be sure that he can't put it on the card before dp goes back as it's out of the way for him

I think he could put it on the card (for which he will have to pay a transaction fee)

but his contract with his merchant provider says he should not

zephyrcat · 09/02/2006 11:01

Right. I've asked dp to give him a ring just to see what he says...

Thank you for your help Zippi
