this has been an on going saga since September last year when my son, who incidentally lives and works a long way away, abroard, was sent a letter by the tax office saying that they are sending him a cheque for over £700 tax rebate. This money never appeared in his bank account, UK bank, so I phoned wth his written permission for them to deal with me and they said the cheque must have been lost in the post. I phone evry two weeks and still the cheque has not appeared they just keep saying they dont know why but someone will phone but I am still waiting. Any one any advice on how to deal with them.5 months along and still they have the money and I bet they are gaining interest on it.

I would step up the phone calls to every 2-3 days and you should also get the interest paid as well. Or you could ask the Citizens Advice Bureau to phone on your behalf. Letters don't work. My mother's tax rebate included interest.

Why not contact your MP about it and get him/her to write on your behalf.
I worked for the Inland Revenue years ago and MPs letters were always treated pretty seriously - it might still be the same now.
Good luck.
