This Govenrment makes me so so so mad. Now the f*cking tax office will not give a receipt for returned Tax Returns - why ??? Because then you have no proof whatsoever that you handed your return in on time and can therefore be fined £100. Last year we handed in our returns on time and luckily dh insisted on a receipt which was just as well because the tax office tried to fine us £200 for returning them late. I know of 2 other people who also got fined last year despite not being late with their Returns. Well suprise suprise our increasingly corrupt goventment has now told all tax offices they ARE NOT ALLOWED TO GIVE RECEIPTS. so, get your Return in on time and await your fine.

If you do them online you get a confirmation from the Tax office that they've received it.

Bit late now, but next year send by recorded delivery.

prettybird · 31/01/2006 14:16

Before I did them on line, I used to write on the front of the form at the top:
"Hand delivered to Tax Office on 31/1/xx at...." and put the time on once I got there.

They did once try to say it was handed in late 9either to me or dh) - but a quick phone call got that sorted.

They tried to fine me last year, but I had sent mine in guaranteed next day delivery and I kept the receipt, so they had to withdraw their attempt to fine.
I keep proof of every piece of correspondence I have with the tax office and keep written notes of any telephone conversations getting full details of the name & surname of the person I have spoken to.
Have always done this regardless of the Government that is in power!

GDG · 31/01/2006 14:44

I do mine online so you get an email - have always kept mine

ladymuck · 31/01/2006 14:48

And dare I suggest it but the majority of people could get them in well before the deadline. You even have the option of using reasonable esitmates if you're still waitiing for complex overseas information etc.

Don't think the Government is to blame really - even with the fine loads of people will still file late.

prettybird · 31/01/2006 14:52

They did drop the fine. But then, I am sure I had also written on dh's return that it was hand delivered.
