Hello,
Very worried person here! I just made a payment from my RBS current acc to my Barclaycard but have sent the payment to a very old and now closed Barclaycard number by mistake. I am so worried I'll have lost the money and wondered if anyone could tell me what will happen? My bank have said they cant stop the payment and Barclaycard say I have to wait 24hrs until it shows up. Eeek please can someone reassure me as it was a large sum?
Thanks

If the account is closed then surely the payment will just bounce back in a few days?

Thanks Betty,

Is that what would normally happen? I really hope so...

Why don't you just call Barclaycard? Tell them the erroneous payment details you used. Explain it was a mistake and ask them to apply the money to your account.

It will be sitting in the Barclaycard internal suspense account so they will be able to find it. If you don't inform them they will be charging you more interest anyway. Maybe put it in writing after you have phoned them so it is on record should there be a dispute.

You should call your bank as well so both ends of the payment system know.

I've done this in the past. Speak to the bank - tell them what number Barclaycard you've paid and they will find they money floating in the financial twilight zone. It's horrible when you realise what you've done, though, isn't it? Don't worry; it's eminently fixable.

Thanks for the replies. I'm just going to send a secure message to Barclaycard so its all written down. Fingers crossed it sorts out soon (I am just a big worrier!)

This happened to me. I transferred money from First Direct to an obsolete Egg Card.

Like you it was too late to stop the payment but First Direct said when things like this happen the payment goes into a stop gap account at the recipient location (in my case Egg) where they try and establish where it should go. However as I had informed First Direct they said they would inform Egg and it would be sent back and it was within a couple of days.
