Banking question - please help!

Putting it simply my DH was made redundant and the account number quoted for the payment was slightly incorrect so the Insolvency Service paid the money, it was held in the bank's holding account and then when we didn't claim it in time (as we were not aware that it was in a holding account) it was returned to the Insolvency Service.

Bank know date it was returned, account number and sort code, Insolvency service have done a BACS trace and say 'no it's not here, it's now an issue between you and your bank'.

WTF am I supposed to do now?

Get the bank to provide you with a transaction report (you shouldnt have to pay for this) and have it faxed over to the people the money went back to. Who supplied the wrong number? You need to get both parties to check this out - it is not true banks fault but the people who sent the money to the wrong place. They owe you interest on this money!

This is quite an investing article. Anyhoo the bank needs to prove where the funds went to and make the recipient cough-up.

Thanks Wah - I will check these out, it was us that slightly misquoted the account number but the money cannot have just vanished into thin air. I actually feel that the bank is trying to behelpful but the Insolvency Service could not give a flick - no surprise there, oh and no, I can't talk to the finance department there as they are an entirely separate company but deal only with the payments for the insolvency service...
