Overpaid tax

Hi I am self employed and paid too much tax. I waited the 4weeks required in which i should have received the refund. When this didn't arrive I contacted the tax office. They told me that for some reason it was not being issued so they would send and email and get someone to find out why it was not being issued and I would hear in the next 3 weeks. Does anyone know what this is about?

If it's a large amount they should return it asap but, if it's a small amount, they may try to give it back by reducing your tax code rather than as an actual cheque. Either way, don't accept the '3 weeks/e-mail/find out' explanation you've been given because it has 'fob off' written all over it :) Call back and keep calling until you get a proper answer. Last time I claimed a rebate I got the money back inside a week.

They held on to my refund last year, and said it was for security checking - bollocks. It had to go to the same bank account as it had done for the past 4 years.

They want the interest on your money!

They are getting Belgian - we are after a refund of our car tax and it will take 4 months in total - 2 months for a letter to tell us what we are owed (arrived yesterday) and another two months to refund us!

my car tax took about 3 weeks, I didn't get a letter telling me what I was owed, I just got a cheque.

Yours was from the DVLA I expect - I am trying to get mine back from the Belgian authorities who will sit on your money for as long as they can.

and it took me off the topic of answering the thread!

(yes mine was UK, I missed the Belgian indication).

Re UK personal tax refunds - in general they are pretty quick, but a number are held up for random checks (I think scaryteacher had a thread on this last year?), but they should be able to tell you that it is either in progress (and should be with you shortly) or has been sent for checks.

Just checked UK bank account, and refund is in there for my tax overpayment. I only sent the return in on 13/10. This is strange, I usually wait ages.

Yipee, that's Christmas paid for!!!
