Can I claim benefits if I am seperated but not divorced

Just exploring options here.
I mean if I decided to leave DH with my children and live somewhere else?
Obviously I know it takes time to divorce so wondered what would be available if seperated but not yet divorced.

Tax credits were quicker than housing and council tax benefits. Made claim lateish April and got first tax credit payment beginning of May. Housing and council tax benefit was definitely into June (as had already made the June council tax payment). But it was all backdated and ended up with council tax rebate. Had expected it to be at least 6 weeks so wasn't too bad in the end.
