What is a "National Insurance Number" and how do I get one?

I stepped in and taught a friend's class last week while he was away, and now I need to get paid by the university. But the form requires a National Insurance Number and apparently I won't get paid if I don't supply one. But I don't have one. What is it and how do I get one? Is is the British equivalent of the American "social security number" which you're issued when you're born and is a bit of a palaver to get later on?

Yes, call the tax office the university give you and they will give you one.

Thanks MaryP0p. I called the Uni, and the woman I spoke to (her English was poor) said I had to ring my local "social security office." Never heard of a social security office. What does she mean exactly?

Sorry to stick my nose in, if you have a phone-book look under the heading, Department of Health and Social Security. There should be one near where you are living - just telephone them, explain your situation and I'm sure they will be able to help. HTH

You need the number for your local Department of Work and Pensions.

Thanks everyone! I'm on hold with them now to book an appt. . .What a palaver!

Well at least your starting to get somewhere - put the phone on speaker-phone and make yourself a cuppa

at Browny.

(Still furious about this phone queue though!)

Would it be possible for you to go there yourself - you might have to anyway to show I.D. - this phone call is really going to cost you quite a bit!!

Well, that was my first thought. . .but I rang to find out what docs I needed and they said I have to ring for an appointment, and then they gave me a separate number for that.

Anyway, just spoke to someone. Appt on Thursday. I have to take along about 30 documents incl dh's passport. Hope I don't get mugged on the way! Thanks again for your help.
