this is our local council benefit calculator

Must use the same criteria everywhere. I think.

dh says
you have to be liable for council tax
you must have less than £16000 in savings
the rest is means tested, so will be calculated on household income, number of children is taken into account.

if you are the only adult in the household you can 25% discount for single persons discount.

hope this helps

It's easier to get housing benefit. VERY hard to get council tax benefit, especially if you are a homeowner.

Pensioners even have a hard time getting it.

The housing benefit app is the same as the council tax one, so it's worth completing an app.

housing benefit
dh says...

the same means testing applies as for council tax and housing benefits. you can apply at the same time. you can only claim housing benefit if you pay a commercial rent for your home.

most councils have a housing benefit and council tax benefit calculator on their websites

nikkie · 25/11/2005 21:57

On that calculator I am not eligible
Have to try and find more ideas!
After morgage, council tax is my biggest outgoing and was hoping to cut it.

Good luck, nikkie.

It's VERY hard to qualify for council tax benefit.

My ILs are on very basic pensions and aren't eligible for it.

expatinscotland · 25/11/2005 22:45

I'd like to add that for many, many people, council tax is their biggest outgoing after rent or mortgage.
