Selling a gold chain

Could anyone advise me how not to be ripped off selling an old 9ct gold watchchain? It was my Grandpa's,it must be at least 90 years old, and weighs nearly 2 oz. I really dont want to part with it, but badly need some money for something.
I've looked at gold prices and think it should be quite valuable, but I dont know if those charts and prices apply to jewellery, or just bullion?
Where should I go,and how do I sell it for best price?
Thankyou

are you in London? If so there are loads of gold dealers in Hatton Garden, near Holborn. They will weigh it and give you what it is worth in weight, they won't be interested particularly in a watch chain I don't think. Look online for current gold prices. Don't sell at these gold parties or to the men who set up stalls in shopping centres.. they won't give you the best price.

In Which? magazine that arrived the other day, it rated Tesco Gold Exchange (new gold buying service from Tesco) as being the most competitive from those that they tested online and on the high street. They did the tests in Jan 2011.

Might be worth a look?

If there is any value of the item as a collectable, maybe worth trying ebay perhaps. In the same article by Which? it did say that they did get more through selling through ebay. But, I guess that would depend on what you're selling.

You can sell it Hatton Garden metals online. I have used them and they were very good, money next day in bank account. They get good reviews from others on moneysaving expert website as well.

another one here for hatton garden metals from the martin lewis website. They were very professional, the money arrived in the bank the next day via "faster payments" and, most importantly, they offered the most!
