car insurance - suspending with no car - protecting no claims bonus

i have no car.
i thought, great , cancel my car insurance, but they told me i could suspend it, so i dont lose my no claims bonus.
however it seems i am still payign the same amoutn i was paying before.
when i rung again they say i pay to protect my no claims but will get a refund when i get a new car, apart from frist 28 days.

anyone any good advice about this?
it seems crazy to pay this much per month just to safeguard something

I gave up my car. Didnt knwo about this and 2 or so years later tried to start it again.Couldnt get any no claims back. They said it depends on insurance company but most wont let you keep it for more than a year without cover. Can you ask them to keep your bonus for a year without paying?

thanks for responding, it seems crazy to have to pay so much.

We left the country for just over 18 months. When we came back were were told that your no claims is only valid for 2 years without actually having a policy. We were just in time.
