title says it all really. we were discussing doing a secret santa with pressies of max one pound. and four of the six women present said they couldnt afford it. one said she didnt want to do it. but just how difficult is it to spend one pound on something, that is basically just fun, and is, for you yourself????????/
ok, yes, i agree they are on low incomes, but three of them smoke, ( a fiver a day burnt to ashes) and two of them have fake nails done professionally.
errr, isnt that expensive????

just having a rant really

Miserable sods.

I love secret santa.

hunkermunker · 30/09/2005 14:43

I don't like doing secret santa though. Might've been an excuse.

Don't see much fun about giving and receiving tat, tbh. Like adult party bags

auntymandy · 30/09/2005 14:44

that is really tight..I mean £1 how many loose that in the supermarket trolley!!

stitch · 30/09/2005 14:47

no hunker, why would they say it was an excuse when one of them distinctly said she just didnt want to do it? they all sited finances as the reason.
i guess that yes, they are just tight.
thanks for making me feel normal

Why do you bother being friends with women like that. I wouldn't waste my time with them.

stitch · 30/09/2005 14:51

im not friends with them. its a parental support group i go to. they go there too.
it can be quite embarassing sometimes as financially i am probly best off of them all, even though i cant afford to smoke, or have my nails done but i need the support the group gives me, or i would go insane.

Sad

I agree that £1 isn't very much. But we have recently had to draw a line at work because some people have started to want to do whip-rounds to buy cards and presents for birthdays, congratulations and many other reasons. It seems like we're being asked for money for something every week; there comes a point when you just have to say "enough's enough".

Could this be what's happened - they've just reached a point where they want to put a stop to it?

But I still love Secret Santa and it's the one thing I don't mind putting my hand in my pocket for!!

stitch · 30/09/2005 17:13

i agree with you about the cards and pressies thing at work.
but i think these women are just not prioritising themselves come christmas. and using finances as an excuse. i know for a fact that one of them is buying her kid this toy car thing that will cost her two hundred pounds ish.
to each their own way i suppose. i was just having a rant really as i love secret santa.

Someone at work got married recently and those organising it decided what to buy her and then told everyone how much they needed to contribute. I thought that was a damn cheek, and thank heavens I'm only part time and they forgot to ask me, as I wouldn't have wanted to say no, but couldn't afford what they were asking for either.

hunkermunker · 01/10/2005 19:54

That's really rude, SM!

Surfermum · 01/10/2005 19:56

Glad I'm not the only one to think that HM!

QueenOfQuotes · 01/10/2005 20:15

Well I'm skint atm, but complaining about £1 - are they crazy??

staceym11 · 01/10/2005 20:23

me and dh are on an extremely low income (not complaining as we dont have any way off upping it!) but even i can find £1!! and i dont smoke or have fake nails or have new clothes, my daughter gets spoilt but not to the excess of £200, she might have a peice of clothing a week (generally tescos or primark) or a new toy from a nearly new sale, but cant afford £1 for a bit of fun, come on they'r just selfish!!!

stitch · 01/10/2005 20:25

thank you stacey and qoq.
vindication.
i felt like such a rich bitch in that room.
i might be a bitch, but im not rich!
