Washing machine to buy now or not to buy now?

Washing machine has broken - DH's cousin been over and had a look at it. It is buggered. We haven't got lots of money but we are going to get a new one. Was going to get one in the middle of this month but someone at work has said to wait til Boxing Day and the sales.

My question is should we wait til just after Xmas? Will we get a better deal if we wait til then?

VAT goes up January 1st so if you do wait, don't leave it too long. :) Based on what happened last year 'sales' are on already because retailers are keen to boost their numbers in what has been a difficult trading year. They're not waiting for Boxing Day.

If you go to a big shop like Currys or Comet they always have some models on sale. And Chil makes a good point about the VAT.
