play.com-reputable?

Ordered a console and stuff from play.com which I've never used before and received an email confirming order. The order included doing the"verified by Visa" check.
The next day receive an email telling me to call an 0845 number with my card details for a further security check before the order can proceed.
I've never been asked to do this for other oine purchases, some of which have been for much higher amounts and am a bit suspicious.
Is this normal practice?

Check if the number is the same was as on the website.

I've always found Play.com to be reputable and helpful, even when things have gone astray in the post they're only too willing to refund or resend the product.

Hmmm well I shop at play a fair bit and have done for years and they're great, one of the best online retailers I think. But they've never asked me to confirm information by phone. I think you're right to be suspicious.

Have you googled the 0845 number? If it's a number that you can trace back to play.com then in your shoes I'd be OK with calling it. If a google doesn't link back to play.com I'd call your card issuer to ask if the original transaction went through. In fact that could be a first step if you don't want to call the number given.

I use play.com regularly - always found them to be fine. Never come across your experience with them or indeed any other online retailer. Be very wary - there are loads of scams out there.

Contact them via email.

They'll call you back and can explan things if indeed they do need verification. Remember to provide order number and phone number.

Don't know if any of them relate to what's happened to you.

However, I've ordered from play before with no problems.

I use play.com lots, and have never found them anything less than brilliant. But they've never asked me to phone them. Perhaps their system got hacked by fraudsters.

I'd phone a number on their Contact Us page and ask them about it.

DH regularly uses play.com with no problems but has never been asked this. I agree to contact them directly - sounds like it might be a scam. If not, they won't mind you checking.

I'm another one who uses play.com a lot and have always been happy with them.

I've never been asked to ring a number like you have but then again I don't think I've bought anything of high value from them.

I checked the website, the number was the same, rang them and after a bit of hanging on spoke to someone who said it was because it's my first order. They asked for the last four digits of the card number only as well as my d.o.b. (which I gave without thinking). Pretty sure it's OK. They guy seemed very disinterested! Will keep an eye on my credit card account.
