With autumn winter approaching its time to buy dd3 1/2 some new clothes. Last year I spent around £100.00 I think, mainly in H&M, plus coat and shoes/wellies, hat, etc. Does this sound to much. Just wondered what everyone else did. Of course if I had loads of spare cash I would just buy everything in the Boden catalogue. I have bought a coat from there which with the 10% off and free postage came out at £34.00.

Two winter coats -
one weekend £40
one school £38

winter boots £14
winter shoes £25

tights / socks £30

hat gloves scarf £20

then tend to spend about £200 in one shop various places and then bits and bobs through out the yr.

so about £500 ish not including school uniform

twirlaround · 11/09/2005 09:47

I just spent nearer £200 in H&M for dd aged 6. This will be most of her winter wardrobe - there is no school uniform at her school. We have bought a LOT of stuff though - more than necessary - but they have some especialy fab stuff in there this season!
I have also bought another outfit from John Lewis and one from Next and will doubtless still buy more yet although I am trying not to!
Not very sensible really when I should be saving for our next holiday!!!

basketcase · 11/09/2005 09:47

Hoping that this year school uniform will mean fewer clothes..
I have no idea how much I spend. She has the following:
thick wintery jeans
smart winter trousers
smart skirt
party dress
smart winter coat (still fits from last year)
waterproof and matching fleece
2 tracksuits
various T shirts, long sleeved tops,
handful of fleecy tops and jumpers (nanny is good knitter). Plenty of underwear.
2 pairs of trainers (1 good pair and 1 cheap from Asda),
party shoes and wellies
scarf, hat and gloves

Last few years everything was pink or lilac. This year she has chosen lovely creams, chocolate brown trousers, soft apple green top, deep plum colours etc. her stripy scarf ties all the colours in together so whatever she throws on, all look sgood together. Just like her dad. She has a brilliant sense of colour and coordination - everything tones or compliments well. Must let her start choosing my clothes for me as she has a more artistic flair than me.

misdee · 11/09/2005 09:51

about £100 each for the older 2. their coats are stil lgood from last winter, so no need to buy any new ones. i often look out for a coat in the next size up in the january sales.

biggest expense is shoes. dd1 has narrow feet (now an E fitting), dd2 has a G fitting foot, so cant generally buy shoes from tescos etc.

Luckily my kids get given lots of clothes as pressies - my family always give them clothes for Christmas and birthdays and the in-laws also give a fair bit and always give money at birthdays. So luckily I don't have to spend too much - mainly underwear, socks, pjs and then anything they specifically need or I see that I like. I tend to stock up when we visit family in Ireland as clothes seem to be a bit cheaper there - I got some of ds1's school uniform at M&S there and it was a lot cheaper than M&S here. I doubt if I have ever spent anything near £100 per child in one go, more like £20-30.

I also gratefully accept any hand-me-downs from friends children!

Lonelymum · 11/09/2005 09:55

I don't know how to evaluate what I spend. I have 4 children and try to spend as little as possible as we don't have much spare cash, but I don't like seeing them looking like orphan Annie if possible. I buy new for ds1 because you can't get second hand clothes for 9 years old boys and I buy some new for dd as she loves clothes and asks for lots of things, but the other 2 ds's rarely get anything new bought for them by me. On the other hand, some things have to be bought new and I must spend quite a bit on underwear, school uniform, socks, tights, etc. I rely a lot on family and friends buying me things, donations from friends of second hand clothes, charity shops and nearly new sales.

Actually I tend not to walk into shops selling children's clothes as they have such nice stuff, especially for ds3 and dd, that I find it painful to resist buying. Equally, I can go to a nearly new sale, and come back with a bin bag full of clothes and get a kick from knowing I spent about £30 on the lot.

littlerach · 11/09/2005 09:59

Most of ours was xmas pressies that she still has to grow into, nstuff from nearly new sales and hand me downs. DD1 has so many clothes it is ridiculous.

DD2 has her old things! And some presents.

I don't think I've ever gone out and bought a whole new wardrobe, maybe just one or two pieces when needed.

PeachyClair · 11/09/2005 10:34

As little as poss. Asda, Ebay, additions direct 3-trousers-for-a-tenner, hand me downs, probably about £50 for the three. more than I spent in the summer

nutcracker · 11/09/2005 12:07

I have no idea how much i spend on the kids winter clothes tbh.

So far I have brought Ds a couple of bits from M&S and thats it.

Dd2 will have tops of dd1's so she will just need trousers and skirts really.
Dd1 will need everything and Ds still needs some trousers.

Oh and they all need coats.

Skate · 11/09/2005 13:10

No idea!

I'm lucky I have 3 boys so ds3 who is just one has an enormous stash of lovely winter clothes from my older two. Today he's in a lovely John Rocha top that ds2 had on 2 yrs ago . I've also got upteen coats and fleeces so he probably won't need much. Probably buy him a couple of tops so he's not in all hand-me-downs!

Ds1 is now at school so probably won't need much - have just bought 3 pairs of jeans (Next so probably about £30), pair of shoes for out of school (£30) but he does need some new tops. Will probably spend around £50 on new tops.

Ds2 is not in school so will need more stuff although of course he only needs one pair of shoes which I've just bought (£30). He probably needs another couple of pairs of jeans/trousers and a few tops. He's already got a coat I bought in the sale last winter but often mine have on a fleece or jumper over t-shirt and vest and then a raincoat on top. It's rarely so cold they need an artic type coat I find.

PeachyClair · 11/09/2005 13:18

3 boys helps doesn't it? Tho I find as ds3 gets older, most stuff has been trashed before it gets to him! We need the coats- we do a lot of outdoorsy stuff- DS2 has a fleece MIL bought, DS3 still fits last years parka, so just DS1. DS1 trashed his school shoes in one day, so they need replacing, and his school trousers lasted 2 days. DS3 stained his school shirt first day of school lunches!

piffle · 11/09/2005 13:38

I have just bought most of the Boden catalogue BUT there is a method to my madness
It sells well on ebay after she outgrows it, infact it gets usually an 80% or more return, which in the long run makes it a damned cheap wardrobe if you look after it...
So far I've spent about £200 I think but I'm a total clothes whore, well for dd at least I am..
I do ebay a few odds and end s to save up the money for my twice annual splurge...

Lonelymum · 11/09/2005 13:39

Piffle would verbaudet work the same way? I received the catalogue yesterday and would dearly love to buy ds3 a little outfit from it but it would not get much wear as he is my youngest. Also, the clothes are far more than I would normally pay.

steffee · 11/09/2005 14:02

My three have Oct, Nov and Dec birthdays so we get pjs, dressing gowns, a couple of outfits and sometimes a winter coat bought for them from others, all get sent at dd's birthday which is 5th Oct. Then I buy them another winter coat each for dd's birthday, and a pair of boots each. (DD does gets toys from us for her b'day too).

I go round asda, primark and sales in adams or next and additions direct and spend about £50 each on winter outfits (jumpers, thick jeans, tights, socks etc) spread over the next couple of months or so, but usually for ds1's birthday in Nov. DS2's b'day is 22nd Dec so he usually gets one extra Christmas present a couple of days early.

MrsSpoon · 11/09/2005 14:07

Wouldn't have a clue, always buying bits and bobs in sales and things, then if making an order to Next Directory will order a few things for DSs in the next size, theory being by the time they need that size they will have everything they need, doesn't always work.

DS2 has lots of hand-me-downs from DS1 but I still like to buy him a few new things if I can.

piffle · 11/09/2005 20:06

Some Vertabudet outfits sell really well, but I only really know about girls clothes - I do buy one or two things from vertbaudet (for a change you know) and have sold them on quite easily, although return not as good as Boden though...

nikkie · 11/09/2005 20:35

NO idea
Just buy things as Isee them(cheap!)
dd2 has dd1s h-m-ds but wrecks everything,so nothing lasts very long!
Wish we had a local h&M though always has nice stuff

LIZS · 11/09/2005 20:44

Just spent a small fortune on ds and dd's uniform and haven't considered anything special for winter yet. Normally buy a couple of pairs of H and M leggings and coordinating tops for dd. We currently seem to have loads of hand me downs and gifts that should fit though and got her a down jacket in the spring sales. ds may need some trousers as he wore through the knees but otherwise think he can wear much of last years'. Will tend to buy odd items as and when I see them especially if on offer in places like Debenhams, Next, Gap and occasional designer styles such as Esprit.

Passionflower · 11/09/2005 21:10

About £600 for all three dd's, not inc school uni.

Usually Boden. Stuff always gets handed down though, as three DD's aged 5, 3.5 and 1.5!

fqueenzebra · 11/09/2005 21:15

OMG, am amazed Passionflower. You must care a lot about clothes.

Guess I spent about £18 on new school clothes for DS1. Will get all 3 new shoes next weekend (ouch, £100?). And there are bits I pick up when they need them (new trousers from Aero about 6 months ago ) but nothing else special for winter... Have generous relatives/friends and I am the woman who always says "yes!" if someone asks if I want 2nd hand clothes.

fqueenzebra · 11/09/2005 21:18

Mind...
Did spend £45 on dresses for DD from Next 2 months ago, mind -- Primark didn't have anything suitable (DD is VERY FUSSY) and I didn't have the patience to hunt all over town!

Didn't even cross my mind that NEXT would have a sale only a few weeks later... perhaps it would be better if I was more of a clued-up consumer.

Kidstrack2 · 11/09/2005 21:21

I have never actually thought of how much I spend on winter clothes! But just last week I bought dd who is 2.3 4pairs of trousers from Next and 5tops from Adams and Clarks shoes to do her through the winter and now that I have tallied it up it comes to 105pound and I still need to get her winter coat! Ds who is 6 doesn't really need that much this year as he is mostly in school uniform and then joggers afterwards but he does need a new coat!

hatstand · 11/09/2005 21:28

am I mean? I don't buy seperate school coat and weekend coat. I don;t buy seperate school shoes. I don;t buy boots. I buy hats and gloves from woolies for about £4 coz they tend to last about a month before getting lost. And I limit Boden purchases to one or two things each that I've really fallen in love with.

fqueenzebra · 11/09/2005 21:30

Am the only MNer who has never bought anything from Boden, wouldn't do so because it's too dear or maybe just because I don't believe in (don't believe it's a safe bet to ) buying clothes mail order?

motherinferior · 11/09/2005 21:31

Well if you're mean I don't know what that makes me, as I wouldn't dream of splashing out on Boden for my two - sorry, kids, any pricey clothes round here are for me.
