How much do you spend on your childs winter wardbrobe?

With autumn winter approaching its time to buy dd3 1/2 some new clothes. Last year I spent around £100.00 I think, mainly in H&M, plus coat and shoes/wellies, hat, etc. Does this sound to much. Just wondered what everyone else did. Of course if I had loads of spare cash I would just buy everything in the Boden catalogue. I have bought a coat from there which with the 10% off and free postage came out at £34.00.

ds is only 17 months old but can't imagine spending £78 on coats for him ever. We buy clothes in Asda mostly cos it's so much cheaper. My winter coat doesn't even cost that much

Caligula · 11/09/2005 21:32

Very little.

Mostly, relatives buy me stuff or pass on old stuff to me.

My Mum can be relied on to buy clothes for an age 2 years older than my kids ("They'll grow into them") which always irritates me, but in fact, they do grow into them.

About 3 times a year I go through the suitcases and find lots of stuff that now fits them. So I never really have to go and get them anything, except shoes and sometimes bits of school uniform (although relatives normally buy those for me as well).

In all, I guess about £20 maximum!

codsicle · 11/09/2005 21:32

i toot hinkt he weekend coat thing is funny

Caligula · 11/09/2005 21:33

Wouldn't dream of buying Boden

  1. Too dear

  2. Would never be competent enough to send them back if they didn't fit.

QueenOfQuotes · 11/09/2005 21:33

usually £40-50 (if that). Most of the DS1's clothes from last winter should still fit for most of this one (they were a just a little bit big last year ) may a couple of new trousers needed - so probably about £20.

DS2 has got LOADS of DS1's old clothes in the cupbaords/drawers around the house so nothing on him.

motherinferior · 11/09/2005 21:35

I buy good shoes. Otherwise they are dressed mainly out of H&M and Sainsbury's TU. Plus hand me downs.

When I say they, I mean DD1, really. Poor little DD2 trots along in her sister's old stuff.

I should say that my daughters do look very pretty, and very fetching, btw.

KateF · 11/09/2005 21:42

I buy from vertbaudet mainly for dd1 then it gets handed down. dd2 still living on a big bag of hand me downs from a friend with an only daughter. Have bought some second hand catimini bits off ebay for dd3 but am now reselling them and they hold their price quite well.

vickiyumyum · 11/09/2005 21:47

gosh i obviously spend far too much! have two ds' and spend probably at least £500 each ( iam a shopaholic though and love going shopping at the weekend and coming home with bags full of new clothes).

I mix the brands that i buy, ranging from designer to boden, next, gap, m&s, h&m, primark and various catalogues and websites. normally sell most of it on through ebay when the kids have grown out of it and usually only keep a few things from ds1 to hand down to ds2 as they suit different styles and ds1 is a skinny lanky thing, whereas ds2 is more chunky and so things often don't fit when handed down.

I tend not to spend all at once as well, but buy little and often, and when i order through boden always do it with the link from mumsnet so get my 10% off and free postage!

Nevada · 11/09/2005 22:15

Obviously I live completely in the sticks. What does H&M stand for?

hatstand · 11/09/2005 22:18

MI - you will note that I said one or two things that I've fallen in love with. There's a strong argument for saying they are for me. Quite how long I'm going to be able to maintain this approach I don;t know. Memories of trudging round Tammy Girl arguing with my mum haunt me.

motherinferior · 11/09/2005 22:19

Hennes, Nevada.

I know just what you mean, Hatstand

motherinferior · 11/09/2005 22:20

Come to think of it, their whole boho look - so much better on a four year old, I find - is chosen solely for my delight.

Nevada · 11/09/2005 22:22

Cheers, mi.

laughinglil · 12/09/2005 07:10

oops! dh just bought ds a coat it cost £129.99! WTF!!!!! his money! but omg! still gobsmacked!

fairydust · 12/09/2005 07:25

weekend coat is required in our house in case the school coat is dirty and needs washing at the weekend and we need to go out.

Nightynight · 12/09/2005 07:50

My children all have a backup coat as well, though it's usually an old one from a charity shop, or handed down. Essential!

Not sure how much I spend in all, because I try and spread it out over the whole year, buying in sales etc. I've just spent around 100 euros on school equipment.[feeling poor emoticon]

Monstersmum · 12/09/2005 09:38

Not sure how much I would spend in total but DS (4) has a mix of cheap and cheerful and one "nice" outfit per season - this year it's Boden!

I too do the two coats thing - but the second coat is always a bigger size so does the following year if you know what I mean. Had to do it last year as coat came home from school filthy so bought a new one that will fit this year. And have just ordered one from Boden that should do next year too.

I buy at the end of season sales too - then I feel I can justify Esprit or similar. Love a bargain!

Also buy in Ireland - Penny's is great (used to be Primark brand but not too sure now) and good old Dunnes.

Used to love Baby Gap and prided myself on never paying full price but haven't been too keen on their stuff recently.

Was very excited as H&M opened here a couple of weeks ago but no childrens wear! Disappointed.

expatinscotland · 12/09/2005 09:51

Usually a snowsuit, a coat, wellies and one pair of sturdy shoes from Clark's. My mum buys loads of cheap jumpers, fleeces and jeans/bottoms from shops in the US and brings them when they come up in early Autumn. This year, she found a lovely dress coat to bring along. The snowsuit I usually pick up in Adams and the wellies in NEXT.

hatstand · 12/09/2005 11:01

LOL laughinglil. DH went to buy dd2 a coat one year. He came back with a beautiful pale pale blue £100-odd quid job. PALEST BLUE???? £100???? for a 2 year old???? It looked grubby after one wear, went in the washing machine and lost several buttons, - which was great coz it went back to the shop and got replaced by a hand-me down from dd1's best friend. Far more practical (and cheap)

Kelly1978 · 12/09/2005 11:06

I think I have prob spent about £500 on all four of them. I do spurges in the sales of around £100 a time, and then buy other odd bits as I see bargains and so get loads for my money. Most of their stuff is either Next or Debenhams.

foxinsocks · 12/09/2005 11:14

I always get their winter coats at the end of last year's sale - I got 2 divine coats for this year (one from Gap, one from Next) for around £20 each. I normally get just one size up (in the hope they won't grow that much!). The older one also has a school coat (sort of fleece lining with rain jacket on the outside) with the school logo that was around £18.

Other than that, they have fleeces/trousers/dresses from Tescos/Sainsburys/Primark. I don't mind not paying much for clothes but I always get them proper fitted shoes (as dd has wide feet and ds narrow feet) and that's where most of my money went this year (one pair of school shoes, one pair of trainers, one pair of boots each)!

andyrobo237 · 12/09/2005 12:59

Funnily enough I have just added up at the weekend my spend at Next and Vertbaudet - from August 2004 to this august I managed to spend £369!! That doesn't take into account other bits and bobs picked up in Asda or Tesco - probably another £100 over the year! I do try and sell all her stuff on Ebay if it is in good condition! I too have never bought from Boden - far too pricey! All her school uniform was from Matalan and cost me £25! My theory is she will need less clothes as she is at nursery now, but... So far spent £60 in Vertbaudet and £20 in Matalan!! LOL Spend more on a 3.5 year old than myself!

Kaloo20 · 12/09/2005 13:33

LOL - Excuses first ... I'm a working Mum. Don't get near the shops for childrens stuff Monday - Friday and better things to do at weekends than drag children round busy shopping centres

Therefore I buy the majority of my childrens clothes (DD6 and DS5) from Mini Boden. I spend about £300 on each child twice a year + bits from M&S (her) and Timberland (him). Yes ! they do look like walking adverts, and Yes, I examine the catalogue so much and send lots of stuff back that I can usually spot a MB item at 100 paces (very sad I know)

I sell lots of their stuff on eBay (same sellers ID as I use here - if you're interested). Next batch due to go on in about 2 weeks. Now they are at school they don't get much wear out of anything - shocking I know

I'm a big Mini Boden fan for the sheer convenience & if you write to Johnny he always replies - bless him

CHOCOLATEPEANUT · 12/09/2005 22:51

I have got better with DD as when she was born I went mad and she had the whole newborn next range and hardly wore it.I tend to stick to Next as its good vale for money, fashionable and wears well.Shes coming upto 2 and at the moment is still in some summer gear plus a few bits I picked up in the summer sale.I am going out mid Oct and getting her,her winter gear. Will probably spend £150-200 in Next (inc coat)and £50 in Clarkes for shoes and boots.Saying that I pick bits up here and there and she will need new nighties(Mothercare or Asda),knickers, vests, slippers and wellies(Clarkes) the list goes on!!!!!!!!!
