Mothercare have sent me a credit card I didn't ask for - a bit annoyed!

I'm just ranting here so this may well go down as a single post thread!
I signed up months ago for a Mothercare store card as I penny-pinchingly wanted the 10% discount off the car seat I was buying.
I had no intention of using it again as I never buy anything on credit. If I haven't got the money, I don't buy it.
A coupe of days ago Mothercare sent me a new credit card through the post. This I did not ask for nor want.
While it does say on the letter in very small print that I don't have to have it, I am quite annoyed that they can just give me a credit card I did not request!
Maybe my views are a bit out-of-date but I despise credit card companies - they are ruthless in their quest to make money, usually out of those who can least afford it, and have no morals at all.
So, is Mothercare acting irresponsibly or should I just stop bleating?

did they send you a card before, when you signed up to get the discount? if you had already received one and sent it back cancelling your account then i would complain. if you never received the firstc ard then this might be the one that you actually requested, although very late!

thats what i was thinking vicyYY

by getting 10% off you sign up for a mothercare account and this sounds like the card for the mothercare account!

(unless its a card that u can use in any shop, rather thanjust mothercare, in which case it does seem a bitr naughty!)

But dont worry about it.... if you dont want it cut it up!

Rowlers · 07/09/2005 22:23

I'm amazed anyone replied!
It is definitely a credit card, not an account card.
It is a credit card I can use in whichever shop I choose, that's why I'm peeved.
Just think it's irresponsible of them to by dishing out credit cards to people who haven't even asked for one!

I thought M&S got in trouble for doing something similar??

starshaker · 07/09/2005 22:26

what box did u tick as its the same form have you already got the store card

Rowlers · 07/09/2005 22:32

You're right Twig they did.
I signed up for the store card only.
This letter seems to bypass the offering me the credit card and they have just given it to me with a small print "you don't have to use it, just cut it up if you don't want it"
The fact is I won't use the card but I wonder how many others have now got a card which they shouldn't really have?
I think credit card companies are totally irresponsible - they have no regard for the people who get into massive debt and are happy to dish out credit to any old Tom, Dick or Harry.

it is definatley a credit card? spoke to my neighbour who works at mothercare world and she said they sometimes do this with acount cards. e.g you apply for one then cut it up and cancel your account so they send you another one in a few months, just in case you had changed your mind (her store has had several compliants about this) but she has never heard of a mothercare credit card that you can use in any store. she is going to ask around at work and see if anyone else has had any complaints about it!

oh and apparently the cards come from GE capital bank and mothercare don't actually have any control over them.

Rowlers · 08/09/2005 19:08

It is a combined Account card and credit card - the "Mothercard" and I have been "specially selected" to receive it.
The card is from GE Capital Bank but I can't see how Mohercare has no control over this - it's their name on the card!!!

Is it a credit card? I thought it was just a revamped version of the storecard? I got one, and can't remember where I've put it which is a total pita as the original storecard is no longer valid (discovered after I did a big shop, had to leave it all behind, probably a good thing in the long run!)
