Inland Revenue - what is going on?

As covered by the media recently, a lot of people will have to pay the taxman back - up to 2k apparently. So I was pretty worried when I got a letter from them this week (particularly as I have to repay 2k to my employer who has overpaid me for the past 2 years). It turns out it is a rebate (for about £87)BUT for the year 2008-2009! So what the heck is going on? And if I am due money for that year, is there a good chance I'll get a rebate for the period 2009-2010 - particularly as I was on maternity leave for a year?

If you've been overpaid, and have to pay it back, then the tax should be refunded to you. You may well get a refund for 09/10, but it will take a while I would think.

I would ask the tax office for a self-assessment tax return form if your employment/pay situation was anything other than totally straightforward for 09/10. They're not so difficult to fill in if you've kept all your documents and, at the end of the process, you can be sure you're 'all square' at least once a year.

There are some good software packages available that will guide you through the process and file the return online. I've done mine this way for years and (fingers crossed) I won't be getting any nasty surprises through the post.

Thanks. I assume the only document they need is the P60. My pay situation is very complicated because not only was I on mat leave for a year, but also I will be part-time soon. So am wondering whether I should wait til next April to get it sorted out.
