I'm weighing up whether to take it into hospital with me... Don't know if its the right environment for the book, but then it does look like it could be really gripping. Not my usual kind of thing at all.

Sorry to hear about your 'romantic' meal, and hope DH is ok. Not food poisoning I hope? DH and I opted for a cheesy DVD night in instead, and watched the Dark Knight! Don't suppose that's many people's idea of romantic . I enjoyed it though actually. Heath Ledger was fantastic.

Trillian hope the e-mail from Squilly means you won't be waiting long now...

TrillianAstra · 15/02/2009 12:41

Thanks for the offer Flossie I think I can survive for a little bit longer - I've got The Chronicles of Morgaine (fantasy book recommended on another thread before Christmas) cheap from Amazon and I've been putting off starting it because I keep thinking I could get a book any day now...

Heath Ledger as the Joker is definitely not my idea of romantic, but I suppose you could hide behind DH for the scary bits

squilly · 15/02/2009 13:39

I haven't had chance to catch up on this thread and have to admit, I've only just found it as I'm not loving the new format of MNet and am struggling to come on here too often as it makes my head hurt.

We've had a mad couple of months since Christmas and I have been most remiss. I don't think it's good to make excuses, so I won't...

Having said that, DD was sick again on Friday (the last in a long line of viruses and such like) so she was off school again. 1 more virus before the summer and she's off to the docs to see if there's anything awry. She's usually so darned healthy...maybe it's just her age??

I didn't get to the post office on Saturday, as a result, sorry trillian, but tomorrow I'm sending this and a second, if that's o.k. I was going to throw the second one out, but you might fancy a read...I'll put bcsquilly in the bookclub book. The other, feel free to throw away.

I haven't had a book through yet, but DH bought me loads from a car boot last week (I can't believe they start so early) so I'm not short of material. I'm sure that something will make it through soon enough. Sorry for being a pain...

TrillianAstra · 15/02/2009 14:35

Welcome back! You can change MN to classic looks, go to 'customise' (in blue under the words 'Mumsnet talk'), and there's a button that says 'use Mumsnet classic options'.

A spare book would be lovely, thank you!

I wonder where Korma is, she is supposed to have sent you two books by now...

Cocodrillo · 15/02/2009 16:05

Sorry to hear DD has been ill Squilly

Funny about Korma, as she seemed really keen.

FlossieT · 16/02/2009 17:45

@Coco, have I imagined that you read Sophie Hannah last year? If so I think you may well like Flame's book - not that they are the same at all in style, but I found the plots had the same compulsive quality. Maybe not hospital reading though, I guess.

DH fine now - complete mystery what was up, but it was 24 hours and apparently non-infectious since none of the rest of us have had it. The meal was fine, but romance a bit lacking since he went to bed early and I ended up finishing the wine off and starting a new book....

I don't especially like the new style either. The threads themselves are OK but the topic listings - yuk.

FlossieT · 16/02/2009 17:46

argh sorry for double post - I got a complete gibberish message the first time so went back and resubmitted.

squilly · 16/02/2009 20:44

Just a quick note to confirm that I've sent three books over to you today Trillian. DH posted the parcel, so he might have sent them via Yak (he has a tendency to choose the least efficient service available, possibly under the misguided apprehension that I might not ask him again).

I got guilt stricken and conflicted all at the same time - couldn't decide between two books for the bookcircle, then threw in a third to try to compensate for the lateness issue . Hopefully these three will keep you busy for a little while (hopefully you won't have read them all).

Right...off to play Mario Kart for half an hour, then off to start a new book

Flamesparrow · 16/02/2009 20:51

Lol Squilly! No need for guilt, but loving the random bonus books

psychomum5 · 16/02/2009 20:58

ooh, so trillian is getting books soon....???

yay, that means I can catch up too then

sorry to hear you been ill tho. I have too for the last few weeks it feels like, tis really pants. I am lucky that it was arranged for me to just hand my books on, (to flame), otherwise my posting skills would leave a lot to be desired

TrillianAstra · 17/02/2009 11:08

3 books in the post today - yay! Good efficient posting by Squilly's DH I have read one of them, haven't even heard of the other two.

Flamesparrow · 17/02/2009 11:22

Now... to find korma....

OP posts:
squilly · 17/02/2009 11:45

Trillian, now I'm curious about which one you've read...and am glad I sent 2 extras, so at least you've got something new and fresh to work at.

I've just started Margaret Attwood's Robber Bride. I read Oryx and Crake and Alias Grace recently, both very different books, but there's just something so readable about this woman.

And it's a break from the shedloads of fantasy novels I tend to read. I keep trying to be a broader reader, but the fantasy books are like old slippers....comfy, just not always dreadfully attractive

rosmerta · 17/02/2009 11:49

Hi everyone, sorry not been on in a while, no internet now for over a week [twitchy fingers]!

Coco, good luck for the end of the month!

Madhouse, good luck to you too, hope the op goes well!

I've just finished my 2nd book, loved it, must find the thread to post about it! And I've got my 3rd today so am going to post the other one or will that mess things up a bit?

Hopefully, our internet will be back soon so I'll be able to keep up properly!

rosmerta · 17/02/2009 11:50

Squilly, I'm a big MA fan as well! I really liked both of those books, also recommend The Penelopiad which is her version of the Penelope & Odysseus myth. And The Handmaids Tale of course!

TrillianAstra · 17/02/2009 12:09

I've read Oryx and Crake recently, and The Handmaid's tale rather less recently, I always think they are intersting stories but I want more background, more explanation, and more details on the world she has created. What happened for the world of The Handmaid's Tale to come about? In the book it sounds like it changed from a normal-sounding world to this very rigid hierarchical setup far too quickly.

Squilly: go see the thread that's on your book, you should know which one it is even though I've only posted a trivial physical detail of the book. (I thought you would want to know which it was)

Squilly, I can send you a book if you want something to read. If nobody's heard from Korma by next month then perhaps we should skip over her?

squilly · 18/02/2009 16:08

Hi Rosmerta

I'm fine for reading material thanks...if you can get something sorted for next month, though, it'd be good to have something to discuss

Thanks again

Flamesparrow · 18/02/2009 17:10

I am going to CAT Korma now, but yup, if we haven't heard from her by next Monday, we should just skip her and shuffle the list I think.

OP posts:
FlossieT · 18/02/2009 23:15

That's me, enthusiasm all over . Although actually I'm not sure whether you're referring to mailing my books quickly, techno-idiocy double-posting or the happy burbling I was doing about your book over on the book thread
