Anyone fancy joining a new book swap?

I was wondering if anyone fancied joining me in a new Book Swap. I was part of one on here for a couple of years that worked really well, then we all got a bit busy and decided to give it a rest. Now no-one on MN seems to do them anymore!

The idea is that you get a small group together (up to about a dozen) of people who enjoy reading similar genres or are prepared to try something new. Everyone then chooses a book they have enjoyed, that’s not really famous or a bestseller. On the first day of each month, you post your book to the next person on the list...and then the same again on the following month. We posted chocolate too last time but that’s not compulsory! The idea is that you get to read books you haven’t heard of, and chat about them if you want to.

Some of the books we ended up reading last time: The Water of the Hills, Cutting for Stone, The Snow Child, On The Black Hill, Prince of Tides, The Weather in the Streets, Any Human Heart, Cat’s Eye, A Month in the Country.

Anyone interested? [worries about tumbleweed blowing over thread as no-one remembers book swaps]

Is there room for another, I am also an old timer book swop person ! I loved it was fab !

RatOnnaStick · 29/04/2016 11:48

Oh! I used to do this (with another group on here I think, no chocolate was involved anyway Sad). I would love to start again if you'll have me? I came across some corkers of books I would never have chosen for myself but were really good before.

Earlgreywithmilk · 29/04/2016 11:48

Hi - I'm very very interested can I be in your gang please? I like the kind of things u mentioned and I also have a few slightly more unusual books I'd like to pass on and get people's opinion. (has anyone read any Barbara comyns etc?)

RatOnnaStick · 29/04/2016 11:49

mailfuckoff I don't remember a single brand new book before. They were all well used.

KeithLeMonde · 29/04/2016 11:49

Yes from me to old books - nearly all of mine are second hand anyway! And v happy to be open-minded on genre though I am too much of a wimp to read a scary ghost story so will just have to pretend I have read it. Love the idea of reading some books that are different to what I would normally pick up :)

ghostoftheMNchicken · 29/04/2016 12:01

Thanks artifati.

The initials thing sounds like a good solution to the duplication issue.

artifarti · 29/04/2016 12:42

No, new books not necessary. You should eventually get your book posted back to you once it has gone round the circle but things do sometimes go astray, or it could end up in a sorry state, so don't send your signed first edition or anything.

So, we're up for any fiction apart from splattergore, misery-lit or utter filth?!

Anyone want to add chocolate to the mix Grin me.

Well, looks like we are:

artifarti
ghostoftheMNchicken
KeithLeMonde
aristocat
InsufficientlyCaffeinated
mailfuckoff
RufustheReindeer
BertrandRussell
moocowmrs
RatonnaStick
Earlgreywithmilk
Footle? (tbc)

So, I think we're there for numbers.

Have a think about the book you want to send and I'll be back with an email address for you to send your details to. We used to always post on the 1st of the month, for ease of remembering but that's quite short notice. We can either choose a different date, wait for June 1st or aim to send out next week and read quickly Grin.

Oh - for those new to this, we also used to set up a thread for each book so that people could chat about them if they wanted to (if you look in the MN Book Swap Clubs threads, you'll see what I mean).

KeithLeMonde · 29/04/2016 12:51

YES CHOCOLATE :)

InsufficientlyCaffeinated · 29/04/2016 12:55

I am definitely happy to receive chocolate (but whoever sends to me on the chain, please no nuts, no Nestle!)

InsufficientlyCaffeinated · 29/04/2016 12:57

(Also happy to send chocolate, that makes it seem like I'm intending on just getting a pile of chocolate but not sending any on! It's lunch time, I'm thinking of my stomach!)

BertrandRussell · 29/04/2016 13:01

Yay! Can we possibly go for posing on May 2nd? Or is that too soon?

luckiestgirlintheworld · 29/04/2016 13:07

Let me know if anyone pulls out- this sounds bloody great.

artifarti · 29/04/2016 13:22

If people can get their details to me by the end of Saturday, I can email everyone on Sunday/Monday and we could be ready for posting on Tues (2nd is a BH)

Send the following details to artifarti1 at outlook dot com :

Name
Postal Address
Initials of book (e.g. ROTN by TH)
Chocolate no-nos (e.g. no fruity/nuts/white/Nestle/booze)

With chocolate, last time we set a price limit - shall we say no more than £2.50?

Is that feasible?!

KeithLeMonde · 29/04/2016 13:41

Now to choose a book. I normally give all mine away after I've read them so not sure what I have knocking about that I've actually read! (two shelves full of TBR though....)

aristocat · 29/04/2016 13:53

Don't forget to put your mn name in your book please. This helps on the chat thread and to get it returned once everyone has read it Smile

mailfuckoff · 29/04/2016 14:10

great, will sort out a book tonight.

I will also name change back to something sensible but will let you know my new name artifarti.

I'm very excited :-)

artifarti · 29/04/2016 14:13

And the first email is in, crikey, fast work!

OP posts:
mailfuckoff · 29/04/2016 14:19

Ok - this is me being the hard of thinking.

  1. we send a book to a person on the list we get told to send to.
  2. we receive a book and read it
  3. we then send that book to the same person on the list

So each month we are sent a book from person A, read it, and then send it on to the same person (person B) along with a treat to eat?

Eventually your own book comes full circle back to you.

Is that right?

artifarti · 29/04/2016 14:24

Spot on Smile
