Very confused with EPU advice

I am 5.3 weeks and went to the EPU as had some brown discharge over the last few days.

They gave me a pregnancy test and said that as it didn't show positive until after 6 minutes that I am about to miscarry.

No follow up has been offered just for me to retest in a weeks time.

We are now so confused. What happens if I don't start to bleed?

Hi mynameis,

Really sorry about your mc

I don't know the answer but I didn't want your post to go unanswered so I'm just bumping it up in case someone else does!!

Do you have a nice GP you could go and see? I guess if you don't start to bleed, and still test positive for pregnancy, they will offer something else (e.g. ERPC). I'm really sorry, it does sound really confusing what they've said. I have heard that it is possible to miscarry and only have a little bit of bleeding, so maybe there won't be a lot.

I'm sorry I don't have anything really useful to say Hope you are getting lots of support and hugs.

xxxxx

Hi thanks for answering. I have just been to gp and he is saying that in his opinion a pregnancy test should be read within 10 mins so a positive at 6 mins is fine.

He will not refer me for furthur testing (recurrent miscarriage, this would be my 3rd) until in his words 'IF the miscarriage happens'

Very down and confused

Were you not offered a scan? Or blood tests?

Phone the gp or the Epu and demand a scan or blood tests to determine the hormone levels.

Don't let yourself be put off.

Sounds horrible, and making you wait is terrible.

lal123 · 17/03/2010 18:55

Hard as it is I think it is just a case of "wait and see". I know its hard - been there myself twice. As you'll know there is very little they can do at this early stage. Good luckxx

Agree with MmeLindt, I would at least push for blood tests to see if your hormone levels are rising, surely they can do this?

Am so sorry that you are having all this worry and are getting so little support from the EPU, especially as you have had 2 MC's

MmeLindt · 18/03/2010 14:20

How are you today, Mynameis? Any change?

iggi999 · 18/03/2010 19:40

Blood tests (I thought) were standard - if they do two with a few days gap they should know for definite, surely?
I found out through one of the clearblue tests that tell you the weeks post conception - I'd had one that said "2-3 weeks" and when I did another after some spotting it had changed to "1-2 weeks". Though I'm sure they are not 100% accurate. Hope it goes well for you. Think I'd have a sit in at the EPU.

mynameis · 19/03/2010 15:19

Hi ladies, unfortunately EPU were right and I have began to miscarry. Now have to look at the road ahead of tests for recurrent miscarriage.

I feel emotionally empty at the minute, I never even considered the reality of 3 miscarriages in a year

Oh, I am so sorry, Mynameis.

I hope that the tests that you will now receive shows what is going wrong and the docs are able to help you.

Take care.
