Less far along or pregnancy not progressing?

I posted this initially in Pregnancy not realising that this topic was here so thought there'd be no harm in posting again in the right place...

I went for a private viability scan yesterday at BabyPremier in Harley Street and it turns out that while I thought there was a possibility I was about 9 weeks gone, it turns out that either I am a little less than 6 OR the pregnancy is not progressing.

I have to go back in 10 days but am besides myself and feeling very upset and disappointed.

To give a little back-history I'm 37 and I had the contraceptive implant (Implanon) inserted last August (2009).. I didn't get on very well with it and my partner & I decided that at some point soon we would want to try for a baby and so I had that removed at the end of November. The doctor put me on the mini-pill (Micronor) saying that when we decided to try, to just stop taking it.

I took my last pill on 31st December 09 and I had a bleed on January 2nd 2010. I wasn't sure whether this was a proper period or a withdrawal bleed but I've had no bleeding since.

In February I had quite sore boobs, was very tired and felt a little constipated so bought a pregnancy test on Feb 18th. The first one that evening was positive, as was the 2nd the next morning(!).

I went to the doctor on 26th Feb - she didn't take a further test or anything but using the date of my LMP said that I was 8 weeks gone (Idid explain about the pill etc). She referred me to the local midwives and said that they would probably call me for a scan at 12 weeks. For some reason, I was feeling a bit paranoid, I took another preg test on March 1st which was again positive.

However as I had been a little erratic with taking the minipill and as I wasn't sure if the bleed was a real period I was a little concerned that there was a possibility I was further along and didn't want a 'late' scan as wanted to have combined testing for Downs. Which is why I booked the scan at BabyPremier. The scan showed gestational and yolk sacs but no foetal pole - so as I say, I am either just under 6 weeks or the baby stopped growing at 6 weeks

The other thing I should mention is that I did have very tender boobs until a week or so ago. I was also very tired. I'd had no morning sickness. While I am still pretty tired (which could be due to the fact that I haven't been sleeping very well through the night for about 10 days) my breasts no longer feel anywhere near as tender as they were.

This combined with the scan results means I'm a little freaked out.

Has anyone had a similar experience? How did it turn out?

And apologies for the long and waffly message!!

I would go to your GP, tell them what has happened and ask them to refer you to your local early pregnancy unit, I think they will be able to do hcg blood tests to check the level of pregnancy hormone in your body and see if it doubles over 48 hours. Waiting for 10 days is just awful when you will be worrying so much.

Good luck, I am sorry you are having such a worrying time.

hi there, finding it hard to get my head round all the information in your message but i imagine it really depends whether that was a 'real' bleed at the beginning of January, and when you ovulated etc.
your first positive pregnancy test was Feb 18. to get the positive preg test you would be four weeks pregnant minimum. (technically, though it always seems strange that the first two weeks count!) but you could have been a lot further along by then. it means you should be at least six weeks by now, more like seven, at the very minimum. it's impossible for any of us to say really, either way. i don't massively like the sound of your scan result, but it's all so confusing with your dates that it sounds as if there is definitely some hope.

Thanks to all of you for your replies by the way - and I just wanted to update you.

So - after the longest 10 days of my life I went for my 2nd scan on Saturday just gone and it turned out that everything is fine!! I was approx 7 weeks on Saturday and a strong heartbeat could be seen.

It was so not what I was expecting the sonographer to point out and having convinced myself of the worse I promptly burst into shocked and relieved tears.

I imagine the next 5 weeks will be almost as nervewracking but I wanted to thank you all for your kind words and thoughts

Hi Cat, so glad for you. Just seen this thread and spent some time calculating your dates. If you tested on 18th Feb, you could have been as little as 10 days past ovulation, making ovulation on the 8th Feb, with your resultant (theoretical) lmp being 14 days before that - 25th Jan, which is 3 weeks after the date your doc presumed to be your lmp. So, 6 weeks when you thought maybe 9 weeks.

Anyhoo, that's by the by because you've got the definite info now. Good luck with your pregnancy.
