"Natural" MC - how do you know it's complete?

Someone has got me worrying today about this, as they assumed I would have a scan to check everything had gone (mc at 6 weeks).
Has anyone experience of this? Bled for about 5 days in total, all stopped for last couple of days.
Really don't want a scan (haven't been offered one either) but want to be sure I'm "ready" to try again, physically.
Your advice would be much appreciated.

When I had my early miscarriage (5 weeks) I was told to do a pregnancy test and make sure it was negative. I think the idea was if it wasn't negative there might be something left still and then they'd look again.

iggi where you seen by you epu? it varies from area to area, but my local epu would ask that i go back 2 weeks after to do a pg test and rescan if still getting + tests.

can you get a cheap test and see wht it says? if not see your gp and they should be able to advise.

i had a medically managed mc, and thought i had passed everything. still getting positive tests 2 weeks later and needed erpc. i was told that 'retained products' can possibly cause infection.

all the best

I agree with LunaticFringe - it's good to draw a line. I found it a very upsetting line to draw but reassuring at the same time.

Thank you all. I've always enjoyed Mumsnet but had no idea how reassuring it could be till the past week!
I didn't know that retained stuff would lead to a positive test result. Will certainly do that. Have the odd twinge very low down in pelvis, hoping that's nothing. Just feel twat for getting back in touch with GP/EPU again.

Thanks everyone.

I've recently had a natural mc at 8 weeks and didn't have any scans at all. No-one suggested it and I didn't want it. Too much associated with having a baby to me. I don't think its a necessity if you don't want it. I just did a test a week or so after the bleeding was over.

Thanks Mamadoc.
Got a BFN yesterday so I guess that's me back to square 1. Just hoping the stories of women being "extra" fertile for a while have some truth in them!

I MC'd naturally at 12 weeks recently. It was the day of my scan and they couldn't see very much for a baby of that age (it was too small) and so re-booked me for another one 11 days later. After I MC'd I kept the appt and all they did was a pg test which they said showed no retained products. Even though I was at EPU they didn't scan me. I was told they don't scan as a matter of course to check everything has gone.

It's been 4 weeks now and I am feeling better about it all, but have a little cry sometimes. Good luck.

Thank you WYG. Sorry for what happened to you. I think the feeling ok/having a cry pendulum will keep swinging for some time for us all!

I was told at my EPU they scan after natural management. Had that 8 days ago and was told the miscarriage was complete and told to do PG test 2 weeks later (am horrified at the thought of POAS!). Then yesterday started bleeding heavily and passing clots again and have been told to go back to EPU on monday and possibly have retained products

iggi999 · 06/02/2010 21:28

Yikes. I hope it is all sorted for you on Monday. I've done the POAS, it is quite a sad one! But part of moving on I suppose. Good luck.
