Is there any risk of developing an incompetent cervix after having multiple D&Cs ??

I've had 4 mcs in the last 13mths or so, 3 of which required a D&C. For the first op, my cervix was already dilated (because my mc had already started but they couldn't stop the bleeding). My cervix had to be dilated 'manually' for the last two ops.

I'm still not sure whether or not we'll be ttc again but just lately, I've been wondering whether there is any link between having multiple D&Cs and developing an incompetent cervix in a subsequent pg.

Does anybody know or have any experiences that they would be willing to share (good or bad)?

Hiya, sorry for your losses. I think that that multiple D&Cs can cause incompetent cervix, in some cases, but there is a test they do at the start of the second trimester and, if they find problems, they can often treat it.

Thanks for your reply, good to know they can detect cervical problems in advance...

Hi, very sorry for your losses. I read a report that 3 or more can cause IC (12% risk) so still much more chance of not having it. I have had 2 D&Cs, 2 early m/c and 2 m/c after 20 wks. I also have had 2 normal births and 2 c sections after failed ventouse. One of those m/c (20 wks) was due to IC and there were no signs or warning at all, no contractions, too late for a stitch. Usually it is only after a loss that it can be diagnosed unless they are looking for it. I again had IC in my last pregnancy at 20wks (picked up on scan which i had weekly due to last loss) and luckily a stitch worked this time and i had a 3rd section at term. If you are worried at all you can ask for cervical scans between 16-22 weeks. If they see any sign they could do a stitch. I know it is so scary to know whether to try again, take care.
