1st cons appt..... not sure what to think

so, had my 1st appt with cons today.

not sure what to think really.

he finds my case 'very interesting'

he doesnt want to do any more bloods or do scans/lap and dye as i have had 2 sucessful pg's

basically we have to wait 3 months for next appointment, where we will have the results of dp's blood and sperm test

no mention of any plans for future pg's or any possible treatments

he also said that by looking at my case its more than likely an immune issue.

at least he didnt say the dreaded 'its just bad luck'

it just feels like i have waited so long for this appointment for nothing.

Hi there J1MP, i felt the same after i saw my first nhs consultant. I d been thinking and planning and hoping he would have some answers for me but to no avail. Actually he did pretty much say more than likely bad luck. I remember coming away feeling very let down and disapointed. If i were you and your not happy with what he said, ask for a second opinion-i did and ended up with an amazing consultant who has now referred me onto st marys. Good luck x

sh77 · 19/11/2009 19:38

J1MP - given that he said likely immune issues, did he suggest blood tests?

kissmummy · 19/11/2009 22:24

hi just1 it's interesting to hear how you got on. we were exchanging emails before, remember? i think you said you were going to email me for a list of the tests i am having done privately, but i didn't hear from you. sorry if i've got confused and it was someone else! i'm really surprised he wants to do a sperm test on your husband. have you any idea why? both consultants we have seen have said it is next to impossible that recurrent miscarriage is caused by sperm problems - once they get you pregnant they've pretty much done their bit! the only issue with sperm is to do with some kind of free radicals ( i can't remember what the precise medical term was) but the treatment for that is just more Vitamin C and selenium.
the blood test on him will be for chromasomal problems (karotyping) i'm pretty sure...it's a bit weird that he thinks it's "more than likely an immune issue"but didn't suggest next steps. if it is an immune issue there could well be treatment! could you afford private tests?
i also felt really flat after my appointment, though in my case he did recommend lots of tests so there were some next steps. on the other hand he didn't sound as optimistic as i had hoped! i know how hyou feel.
hi samoy when is your appointment at St Mary's? it's fantastic news that you've got in there...i have tried to get a private appointment at St Mary's and even that is really dificult!

just1moreplease · 20/11/2009 07:26

samoy i did think about trying to see a different cons but i have waited so long for this appt, i dont think i could take waiting any longer. all the best for st mary's, my mum was treated there about 20 years ago.

sh77 glad to see your doing ok. i think he wants to avoid getting into immune issues until he has ruled out all other possibilities.

kiss yes it was me was going to email, i think i took the email address wrong. sorry about that, i have got the info pack from care nottingham and am also looking into goin to see dr gorgy in london. im trying to get as much info together as poss then make a decision in the new year

i too was suprised by the sperm test, i would have assumed that was all in working order. the chromosome and sperm tests can take up to 6 weeks to come back and as you need to be seen in fertility clinic for sperm tests you need an appt. cant get one until late december

he did seem quite encouraged that i have had 2 succesful pg's. he said that alot of immune issues are triggered by a 1st pg, so the fact i have had 2 is a good sign.

he did also say that there is a good chance we will never know he reasons. but i am glad he didnt say there was NO reason iyswim.

anyway dp has banned all discussions until the new year now. he can see how its starting to take over my life! v frustrating as im almost certain i ov'd yest it was so hard not to bd.

kiss what is the next step for you now?

justone my email is [email protected] so do message me if you want to email privately to compare notes about testing etc. i'm sort of encouraged to hear your consultant thinks immune issues can be triggered by first pregnancies as that is what may be going in my case..(as i have one DC). i am really hoping so as it would at least be an answer...
i am currently waiting for my my cycles to return to normal after my most recent miscarriage. i am hoping for my period in a couple of weeks time. after that i will be able to have my blood tests at the Lister Fertility Clinic. I am seeing Yau Thum who specialises in immune issues but also tests for the less controversial stuff like clotting.
as you say the test results take a long time to come back even in the private system - up to six weeks for the immune tests. not sure why! if these tests show nothing i will then have a hysteroscopy in January or February just to be sure there is nothing going on with my uterus that can shed light on the problem. total cost for tests plus hysteroscopy will be about 4k i think . i am lucky to have the savings and my mum says there is no better use of the money and i think she is right. if none of those investigations show anything i will have to brace myself to try again, and again, and again. after miscarriage no4 i said to my husband don't let me try again if we haven't found a cause and got some treatment; but now, four weeks on, i am already getting braver and coming round to the idea of another go...

just1moreplease · 21/11/2009 22:23

hi kiss i agree 100% about trying again, i swore i wouldn't try again until after testing. now i know i have 3 months to wait to see cons again im thinking 'hmm i could chance another pg in that time' not good. i am looking into getting on a trial for nk cells at lwh. its a blind trial so you dont know if you get the steroids or the placebo. worth a shot tho i think.

im still waiting for my cycle to settle down since last mc [sept] never been irregular before so its quite frustrating.

with regards to what the cons said, he did say its probably an immune issue BUT he did point out that in his view these issues are brought on by a 1st pg. the fact that i have had 2 succesful pg's does make it slightly less likely. iyswim

i have been reading sooo much about this the last few days. makin my head spin a bit tbh.

oh and 4k that is incredible! we do have some savings but we have been waiting to buy a place of our own for so long. really dont want to start dipping in until i have exhausted all other available options.

hi kissmummy my appointment at St Marys is on the 8th of Dec. It has all happened fairly quickly luckily, my consultant referred me mid october and i received my appointment last week. Im very happy to be 'on my way' and feel that at last i will be in good hands.Ill be interested to see how you get on with your immune testing as ive been reading Dr Beers book lately and i found it very interesting although it has scared me a little i have to say. If St Marys cant find an answer for me thats another route for me to go down. I know what you mean about trying again, at the time of my last miscarriage i really thought i d had enough and could nt put myself through it again. Now things have settled down, the driving force to have another baby is so strong.I just hope all this heartache is nt in vain and we end up with the baby we sooo long for. Keep us posted and i will too, good luck to everyone x

just1moreplease · 23/11/2009 21:28

samoy am at how quick u got that appt.

i was 1st referred in march and only just had an appoint last week!

i think i am def going to ask for 2nd opinion. the more i think about it , the more i feel fobbed off. when u asked to see someone else did you see your gp to be referred again?

really hope you get some answers soon. good luck

hi there J1MP yes i went back to my gp who was really good about everything, he told me i was more than entitled to have a second opinion. It did drag things out a bit i suppose but i just felt so empty after seeing the first consultant. God i have been lucky getting my appointment so quickly- i think my current consultant is fantastic- slight hero worship going on! I do think you have to keep pushing to get where you want- good luck to you x

just1moreplease · 24/11/2009 15:55

thanks samoy. hopefully see gp on thurs to get things started.

hope you have more luck with your appt.

x
