Week 5 of mc, how much longer?

I had a scan on 9th october and was told i had a mmc and i started to bleed that evening. I bled for 2 weeks, the 1st week was light and the 2nd very heavy with lots of clots and some pain. I then had another scan expecting to be told that was it but they said the sac and placenta was still there. I decided against an erpc as i was still bleeding and hoped it would happen on its own. Week 3 i started to bleed very heavy again and lost huge clots and bled through my clothes and i then passed the sac. Being my 4th mc i knew what it was. Bleeding stopped at week 4 and i was scanned again. Again was told a sac was there and was advised that this was very probably a twin pregnancy due to losing a sac and then a 2nd one being found although it was alot smaller around 10mm. There was no placenta left just this tiny sac. I spoke to the doctor and she said as it was so small and i was feeling well i should just wait so now i'm into week 5 and started bleeding again 3 days ago so here's hoping it will happen. I have never had a mc like this and as yet not heard of anyone else having this problem. Anyone out there experienced this? I am due for another scan on 18th november.

Hi Daisy,

So sorry you are going through this. Your experience sounds very like my first miscarriage. I had two or three weeks of light bleeding followed by a day of very heavy bleeding and very large clots and then carried on bleeding for seversal more weeks. Scans kept showing that I hadn't passsed everything.

Eventually I had an ERPC but that was after about 5 or 6 weeks of the bleeding first starting. They did put me on a course of antibiotics though to prevent me getting an infection. Have they given you antibiotics? I hope it comes to an end soon for you.

Hi thank you for your reply. No i've not been given antibiotics yet but i am being closely monitored by my GP and the hospital. I am also being very carefull to watch for any signs of infection. I really don't want to have the erpc but i guess if i have to then i will.

Hi daisy have just recently had a very similar expierence. Was bleeding for 4wks light to start off with then very heavy. I was at work when I started bleeding un-controllaby and then I passed what I thought was the sac (it was the size of a heart) Couldn't belive how big it was. The bleeding then slowed down, I had a scan a week later only to be told the sac had got bigger, I really couldnt understand this, I explained what I had gone thru and the nurse just said it was more than likely a clot, I didn't believe a clot could be this big. Thoughts went through my mind if it was a twin pregnancy and I had passed one of the sacs but my early scans was only showing a single pregnancy (who knows) anyway after another week of more heavy bleeding and another scan the nurse said again it had got even bigger I chose to have an erpc. I really didnt want this as I have had 2 previous m/c with d&c's and wanted nature to take it's course with this m/c but unfortunaly it didnt and I couldnt bear waiting in limbo for much longer wondering when It was going to pass. Plus I had the worry if I was out and started bleeding heavy again, luckily the first time I started bleeding heavy I was at work sitting behind a desk with black trousers on. I suppose what I am trying to say is maybe an erpc is your best option, I had mine last Tuesday and have for the first time this week started feeling a little normal again. I said to myself at least I tried to let nature take its course and it obviously wasnt meant to be. Its not fair on yourself to go on for much longer. Are your scans showing the sac getting smaller? If they are then maybe wait a little bit longer but if there not it may be time to opt for an erpc.

Hi lulu so sorry for your loss, and thankyou for sharing your story. My scans are showing the sac getting smaller each time and i have now had 5 scans. Everything has passed except this tiny sac that measures 1cm. The hospital feels it will pass and i am bleeding again now. The main reason i don't want the erpc is because i am on the large side and there are obvious risks with any operation.

hi daisytaylor, I would say wait then, if the sac is getting smaller then thats a good thing and at least your body is rejecting it naturally my problem was even with the heavy bleeding the sac was just getting bigger. I think you have done the right thing and hopefully it wont be much longer until you pass it all.

Good luck at this horrible time. x x

Stopped bleeding again, still haven't passed the second sac found on the last scan. So frustrating. Now going into week 6. Feel absolutely fine in myself and no signs of infections so i guess i carry on waiting till next scan on wednesday.
