6 + 4 and no heartbeat :(

Trying not to waffle but brief round up. I have had 2 ectopic pregnancies so when I found out I was pregnant I had an early scan - I should have been 6 weeks but I can be a little irregular so was not too worried when they said looks like 3-4 and HCG's were doing the right thing but the hospital thought it was another ectopic and wanted to operate. I discharged myself as I'd had 2 before and this was different.

4 days later (two weeks ago) the scan saw only the sac and estimated 4 -5 weeks, said come back today and we should see heartbeat.

Today I have been scanned and the baby is 6 + 4 but they cannot see a heartbeat, they scanned through my stomach rather than internally and I am I would say a fair bit overweight.

I need to go for another scan on Friday but they have advised it is most likely a MMC.

Has anyone got any advice - good or bad stories are fine, just need to keep real. At first they just said sorry there is no heartbeat then left us in a room for 1/2 hr thinking all was lost.

Am really upset and I know I will have all the answers I need on Friday but would really appreciate so info along the way.

Thanks for reading and sorry for the long post xx

Oh crumbs. I had 5 mcs and 3 babies.A couple of my mcs were missed mcs ie no heartbeat. So sorry. All is not lost. You should know on Fiday let me know. I am sure they will give you a transvaginal scan which will let you see better. My second baby could only be seen transvaginally at your stage. Hugs. COUld be either wayXXXX

At 6+4, there isn't always a hb, and it can be v difficult to see if a transabdominal scan is done rather than tv.

I'd insist on a TV scan on Friday - the fact that the baby is growing, and your HCG levels are going up well is a good sign

I'd second CMOT.

6+ weeks is early for FH transabdominally, your other signs are hopeful, so who knows?

FWIW, I had 4xMMCs and 3 DC, expecting No4. I would also ask for transvaginal scan next time round, superb picture quality and less uncertainty, one way or another.

Good luck .

I had a TV scan at aprox 6 weeks, saw a sac and no heartbeat. Was sent away and told to come back two weeks later. At second (TV) scan heartbeat was great and DD2 is now 3½.

Ask for a TV scan, TA is nowhere near clear enough at this stage, especially if you have a little extra "padding"...

memorylapse · 09/11/2009 21:24

agree TA scans will struggle to pick everything up at this stage...I had a scan at 6 weeks with this baby (am now 15 weeks) and TA scan onkly saw the sac, but when they did the scan TV you could see the sac and a little blob with a heartbeat..I too have a bit of extra padding

I am sure I have read that with an abdominal scan what they see is often a week behind what they see with an internal scan. I know that with an internal scan they would hope to see a HB at 6+4, but I think that with an abdominal scan they don't expect to see a HB until 7 weeks. This link sort of says as much.
Good luck, I hope you get better news on Friday.

Thank you all so much, the link is particularly fab - I am trying not to get my hopes up and keep it a little bit real but with no bleeding and v little pain (mild cramping occ but no more than you would expect) I am still hoping for good news.

I have 2 DSs 14 & 16 so I have to keep smiling but it's hard esp as DP lives 2 hrs away - still it will soon be Thursday night and he'll be back x

Just a quick update, scan yestreday diagnosed MMC at 6 + 4 (so around Monday when they'd done last scan really).

Have had a lot of pain since so I'm sure nature is doing it's thing - another scan on Friday 'just to re-confirm' but basically am bowing out of this thread.

I sincerely wish all of you the best of luck, busy dealing with two upset teenage DS's and a DP who for the first time saw a scan of his first child - he asked for a picture but the sonographer had gone and they don't store the pictures!

Anyway - good luck all and take care

I'm so sorry to hear this and that you couldn't get a picture. I know how much things like that matter.

FWIW, I have also had 2 ectopics and a miscarriage and am typing this while holding my 3 week old daughter. It's shit for you right now but don't lose heart.
