conceiving after miscarriage

Hi

I've just had a very early mc for the first time- 4 weeks 3 days. I have a child already. My GP said I have to wait for 3 cycles before we try again as it increases risk of mc before then. The hospital says 1 cycle and the miscarriage assoc says it doesn't matter. I'm keen to try asap as i'm 38 though was lucky to be able to conceive at the first attempt.
Your comments would be appreciated.Thanks

Hi tashm. Sorry to hear about your mc. Even though it was early on, it's still not a nice thing to go through.

As to your question, my obstetrician told me to wait for three months but that could have been because I didn't miscarry on my own (12 week scan showed there was no heartbeat) and I had to have a D & C (or something similar). As your mc was early maybe you don't have to wait as long? This link seems to go along with that. However, it did take me 6 months to conceive, having conceived immediately with my previous three pregnancies, so maybe my body just wasn't ready. Not sure if this helps at all. Good luck anyway.

I tried again straight after my mmc at 10weeks and got pregnant straight away after (no period in between) am 12weeks today an signs are this one is a keeper.

I've said this before on here but I miscarried at 7 weeks 5 days my baby would have been due on March 9th this year I caught straight away and had a perfectly health baby boy on 12th may he's now 10 weeks old.

My Dr said there is no medical reason why we couldn't start trying straight away.

Sorry for your loss.

There is no evidence that waiting any length of time or not waiting before TTC again makes any difference at all. Current thinking is that you should go for it again WHEN YOU FEEL READY. That may be immediately after a MC, after a period of time or never again, IYKWIM.
My understanding is that the advice to at least let 1 period come and go was for dating purposes mainly. Now that we have v accurate scans to date a pregnancy knowing your LMP is not that important anymore.
Bear in mind it usually takes about 6 weeks after an early MC to have a period.
I had 4 early MMCs and always conceived again within 3 months (3 DSs ).

I am sorry for your loss. I lost my first baby at 17 weeks last year, and both my GP and my gynaecologist said I could ttc as soon as the bleeding had stopped. I believe in most cases there is no reason to wait for 3 months. We tried straight away and conceived again after 3 months. Best of luck xx

Hi tashm - I'm sorry for your loss.

I had 3 early mcs last year. First was at 5 weeks, and I conceived again straight away. I lost that baby as a mmc at 8 weeks. I then waited a couple of cycles before trying again, but still lost that baby at 6 weeks. Conceived straight after that mc, and I'm currently 36 weeks pregnant.

I'd researched whether I needed to wait before trying again, and concluded (as the previous posters have said) that there was no medical reason. Still had a wibble about whether the second mc was my fault. But I think that's just the nature of miscarriage - it opens your eyes to the stuff that can go wrong.

Sorry about that tashm. I lost a baby at 9 weeks in May - waited for a normal cycle - they advise this to let things settle and so you can date properly. Now trying again! Good luck. Be positive.

The "date properly" thing is ridiculous though. I charted when I conceived DS (now 4) - knew pretty exactly when I conceived, but the dating scan put conception a week earlier, and that was the date that had to be used. DS arrived a day before I had calculated he was due.

So why wait for a period when it's only the dating scan that is trusted?

The only advantage I can see as regards dating is that it saves you from going for an early scan before 7 weeks (the magical date for reliably seeing the heartbeat and therefore helping to put your mind at rest).

Thanks for asking that question. Am in the same boat (first MC last week at 5 and a half week). I'm now a little obsessed about TTC and if it's safe to go for it straight away etc. Thanks to all the lovely ladies on this thread and their advice I know what I want to do now. These are all such personal decisions aren't they.

BEST OF LUCK for the future and when/if you decide to try again.

I had a missed mc then D&C at 12 weeks. Tried again immediately as the advice I ws given to wait was explained to me as to help accurate dating. I got pg after one cycle, and DD is now 7.

I just had to get on with tryimng for another baby, not to replace the one I lost, but to move on with having another child.

If you are ready tro start trying - do!

I had a mmc at 13 weeks (baby died at 12 weeks) followed by an ERPC. I was told to wait one cycle before ttc again. My ERPC was on 30th April, and I just got a bfp on Saturday 25th July - on 2nd cycle of trying. I think they always used to say 3 months because it makes it easier to date the baby then. I would say as well that it took me 2 cycles to get back to normal iyswim.

I would say if you feel ready to start trying again then do, but try not to put too much pressure on yourself to get pregnant straight away again. It might take a bit of time for your body to heal itself.

Hi Tash, just dropping in to wish you the best of luck, whatever you decide to do, and also to say congrats Thandeka... you are now in the low risk zone!

DP and I will be starting ttc in August after m/c at 10 weeks in mid-june...we didn't bother trying in July beecause we have been smoking and drinking like nutters since last m/c, just to get over it I suppose. Hoping to clean up our act this month.

Hoping to get preg straight away...after my first m/c I got pregnant naturally before I even had a period , and that was after 3 years ttc + fertility treatment. Sadly it wasn't to be, but hopefully it bodes well for us to conceive again quickly.

Hi

I had a miscarriage at 5 weeks at the age of 38 and after 1 cycle conceived my second child, who was 10lbs 1 at birth ! I was told that it was not unusual to conceive again so quickly after a miscarriage. Best of luck.

I just found out yesterday that I need a D/C I am 5 weeks Pg , it s my second pregnancy I have 1 boy 4 YO ,I am 36 now and I would like to C as soon as possible , my OBGYN said I have to wait 3 months, I don t know if I will be able to wait.... I will go by my feelings! Good luck

Just for info I had a mc (6 weeks) end of March, had a normal period 27 days later and then fell pregnant. I am now 17 weeks. At 40 I didn't want to wait around for another few months: it was very much a case of now or never. We were very lucky it happened again so quickly.

I actually became pregnant again after mc without ever having a period, probably two weeks after the mc. I was told to wait at least one cycle, but I had stopped bleeding after one week, didn't think it would happen, but there you are.
