15 weeks pregnant with twins - one has died - what happens

I found out today at a late dating scan that I was pregnant with twins, one died at 13 weeks. I have to see the doctor on monday but does anyone know what happens now in terms of medical care and if this will have an inpact on the other baby who appears to be developing normally.

hi there, i'm so sorry to hear about this. i don't have any experience or advice but didn't want your message to go unanswered. this board can be quite quiet on a friday night but there will be someone along tomorrow i'm sure.
i hope you are with someone who is looking after you after what must be a terrible shock.

och, monkeyfeet, i'm so sorry. this happened to a friend of mine, but a bit later, at 22 weeks (although they thought that the baby died a little bit earlier). it was a very frightening time and she was delivered early with her baby girl okay. it was a bittersweet time though, having lost her boy.

I just wish I could go back in time and change things. It feels really strange because I am still pregnant and feeling it but a baby has died.

We really thought twins were a possibilty but this was something I didn't even think about. I feel really lucky at the same time to have been pregnant with twins but then I keep remembering one is dead.

I'm so sorry to hear this, and I hope you feel more positive soon. I don't have personal experience of this but a family member lost one of her twins at around the same stage in her pregnancy and went on to have a perfectly healthy baby girl. It must be very hard to mourn the loss whilst still being excited about having a baby.

This happened to me with DDs pregnancy, one twin died at about 12 weeks, I had quite a lot of bleeding but didn't pass anything, the baby was more than likely absorbed into the placenta (which we kept and planted a tree over). My pregnancy continued until 41 weeks when I went into spontaneous labour with DD. I hope you are feeling as well as possible given the circumstances and are treated with care on Monday.

I haven't had any bleeding but about two weeks ago I did get some nasty cramping. The baby's head stopped growing at 11 weeks and then the body stopped growing at 13 weeks.

That is good to hear you had a dd curly, and a lovely thing to do. I am worried about what the implications are for the other baby and waiting over the weekend is killing me.

Well we did get a bit of scaremongering about vanishing twin syndrome, however this usually is only an issue if the twin dies in the second trimester. It was suggested we had serial growth scans but looked into it and felt it really wasn't an issue. I hope this helps a little.

Just wanted to update. Have seen consultant and arranged my care from this point onwards. I have to have a caesarean at 28 weeks and scans every two weeks from the 18 week mark. But if all is well should be ok baby seems to have been developing well.

Feels very strange that since friday all this has happened still can't quite believe it.
