Where do i go from here?

Hi everybody, I ve been to see my consultant today following my 3rd miscarriage in a row and he s basically told me, in a matter of fact and not very sympathetic way, that there is nothing more that can be done for me.He said i should i just be more positive in the next pregnancy and hopefully things will be fine-easy for him to say, i tried that last time but still lost the baby at 11 weeks!I was lucky enough to be tested for the anti phospholipid syndrome and dh and I were tested for chromosonal abnormalities following my second miscarriage-these all came back normal. My question really is do you think its worth me pursuing the recurrent miscarriage clinic route?What more can they do for me that has nt been done already? I really dont know where to turn next

Sorry for your news, wanted to bump this for you as I've been there (luckily only once) and hope someone can help you out. Not quite the same but I had a healthy baby following miscarriage so there's always hope

Sorry this is happening to you, I don't have experience of it (having first mc) but hope somebody in the know will come along.

There is always hope though, I have read of women having healthy pregnancies after more than 3 mcs and never finding out what went wrong. Some doctors can be ars^y in the way they tell you that though...

Hi Samoy. So sorry about your losses. I also recently had my 3rd mc in a row and no children yet! I've had many tests done and found a few minor things. Have they done an HSG - xray of the uterus? And you should make sure you have your thyroid tested...and perhaps progesterone.
I keep thinking it's a combination of factors that all must be in working order. For me, I have a hypothyroid and MTHFR which is a mutation that makes it hard for your body to absorb folic acid and B vitamins. I'm also going to take progesterone just in case even though I wasn't tested for that. Progesterone can help with immune issues - if you have cells killing off the tissue. Or it can also help if you have low progesterone.

Hi Samoy, don't be disheartened. Agree with what Daynee has said about the testing, especially HSG (not as scary as it sounds btw).

Despite all the tests we never fully got to the bottom of what the problem was but when I had progesterone pessaries, my pregnancy stuck and now I have my son as a result.

Your consultant doesn't sound as though he has a very empathic manner, but there might be a grain of truth in what he said. The other factor for the pregnancy that resulted in my son was that my husband and I had pretty much given up on having a child at all, and had decided to try and get on with our lives! Maybe we just relaxed and it happened, but we will never be sure. Best of luck anyway. xxx

hi samoy,sorry to hear your news. i'm interested that you hint that you've already had interventions/tests even though you've only just had your third miscarriage. what have you had done already? i'm awaiting my blood test results following my third m/c, which i should get next week, and will then take it from there. like you i'm not sure what recurrent miscarriage clinics can actually do if there's no identifiable problem...

hi kissmummy, looks like we ve overlapped on different threads. Anyway i have had chromosone checks and antiphospholipid blood testing as i said.Other tests for infection were also done. I will be having an ultrasound in the next few weeks, my consultant mentioned a hysteroscopy but to he honest i really dont want to have anything so invasive at the moment, my poor body has been through enough lately.I have nt ruled that out at a later date but hope i wont need it. Going to discuss recurrent clinic with my gp on monday, might have more joy with him but suspect he ll prob. tell me the same as consultant.
Thank you for replies everybody-Daynee i do have an underactive thyroid which is under control but when are you tested for progesterone, do you have to be pregnant?

ah, samoy, yes, we overlapped. interesting to hear about your checks. i have a hunch i could have antiphospholipid syndrome because i get a lot of headaches (there's a link) and i'm sort of hoping i do as at least that would provide some answers but we'll see next week.

I can understand you hoping antiphospholipid is the problem, i wanted that to be my case too. Nice easy remedy and all would be fine but really the best outcome is to have normal results, as hard as it is to swallow, chances are we will go on to have our babies. Right now it seems it will never happen but we have to stay strong and believe it will happen. Anyway it will be interesting to see, hope you find the answers you so desperatly want x

samoy, testing your hormone levels mid-cycle will identify whether you have low progesterone or not. Have you had a scan to check your uterus? I was told during my 7th and final pg that the reason I had 4 m/c is that I have a bicornuate (heart shaped) uterus. Implantation on one side means a viable pg, the other side leads to m/c. I was told IUI(?) would have prevented the m/cs. Good luck and don't give up.

Yes samoy, I've got 3 DCs The result of 3 pgs that landed on the "good" side of my uterus. So, don't give up!

Hi Samoy,
Recurrent mc clininc sounds a good way forward, the probs with the nhs clinics is that they stop at basic immune testing such as the APS/Hughes/ chromosomes etc but you could try private clinics.
Try having a look at CARE Nottingham under Dr George Ndukwe or the ARGC in London,
both these clinics look into immune issues and testing to see if there is a reason and use treatments such as ivig, intalipids, steroids, hunira etc... to try and maintain a pregnancy.

Thank you sue 10, been to see my very lovely gp today, he talked about referring me to lesley regan so im really pleased. Going back to discuss things further next week, really appeciate everyones feedback.

I went and had Maya Abdominal Massage at the Hale Clinic in London after a horrid miscarriage at 11 weeks. www.mayamassage.co.uk/
In theory it helps to position your womb properly and this is thought to help with conception. If nothing else it's nice to talk to someone sympathetic and have a lovely long tummy massage. I found it really helpful to my mood after the miscarriage to just focus all my energy on spending some time on myself for once, and spending some money on making myself feel better instead of worrying about other people all the time. I waited six months before trying again for a baby but am now 21 weeks into a healthy pregnancy. Please don't give up hope, and don't listen to negative doctors who are often full of it. Try to concentrate on making yourself feel the best you can mentally and physically. I would also recommend acupuncture. Good luck xx
