SIL going through her 3rd miscarriage in 18 months

She's having a scan at the hospital today to confirm that she has indeed had a miscarriage this time (has had lots of bleeding and passed some clots so she's fairly sure that she has)

Does anyone have any experience of recurrent miscarriage? She asked her midwife why it's happening again and she said "these things happen" - not helpful. Will the NHS investigate these kind of problems or do you have to go private? She's had miscarriages at 8, 17 (mmc, baby died at 10 weeks) and now 9 weeks.

norkybutnice I did'nt want to leave this unanswered. your poor sil, it is so very hard and she has had losses in such a short period of time. 3 mc is sadly the magic number and they will offer various tests now and a recurrent mc specialist. When she is strong enough go to the drs. Sending a hug for you too, these threads have helped me more than I can say.

Sorry to hear your SIL is going through this. The nhs do normally do tests after 3 mcs. I hope she will be okay

Yes - the NHS will offer tests now as she has had 3 miscarriages.

However, in my experience the tests that are offered by most NHS trust are fairly lmited.

Certainly I would have these tests first, but there is a lot more recent research into
the field of miscarriage that the NHS just does not get involved with.

St Mary's in London is probably the best place to start, followed by Liverpool Women's Hospital and CARE in Nottingham in order to receive full testing for Natural Killer Cell immune issues.

Did she have the foetus tested when she miscarried at 17 weeks? Even though this was 'only' her 2nd miscarriage, karyotyping would have been very beneficial as this is the only way to find out whether there was something chromosomally wrong with that particular baby. Many hospitals would do this even for a 1st miscarriage if it is lost as late as 17weeks.

There are lots of threads on here which go into some of the things I have mentioned in much more detail. Have a little dig around.

Your SIL is very lucky to have someone who cares enough to do a bit of research for her. This is such a deeply painful experience for anyone to go through.
