I've just been speaking to a friend.

She lost her baby at 20 weeks in August.

She did a pgy test this last Saturday and it was positive. Her period was due on Monday. She was delighted.

She started her period today.

She's very upset. I don't really understand what's going on. Was she pregnant? She says the midwife told her her womb wasn't ready for implantation.

I really want to help her but I fear my ignorance is going to upset her more.

Can anyone shed some light? What could be happening?

One in three pregnancies end in miscarriage. What caused the loss of her baby before? Could she have a structural/hormonal issue?

So sorry for your friend, especially after such a late miscarriage she must be devastated

sounds like she had what is known as a biochemical pregnancy which basically means a very early miscarriage as the embryo hadnt implanted properly and therefore couldnt carry on with the pregnancy successfully
im very sorry to hear about your friend losing her baby at 20 weeks
i hope she is ok as can be expected.
i would suggest letting her know that you are there for her and make yourself available for a shoulder for her to cry on as although they are very early losses a CP is heartwrenching and a very emotional experience (i have had 2 myself)
