Period 2 weeks after miscarriage or miscarriage bleeding?

I had a MMC at 12 weeks, the miscarriage happened naturally 2 weeks ago. Bleeding got lighter, then brown before I passed what I think was the final bit of pregnancy tissue (10 days after the miscarriage). Last week the discharge was minimal, but last night and today has gone back to red blood. Is this likely to be continued miscarriage bleeding, or could it be a period? Anyone had similar?

You normally need to take a pregnancy test a couple of weeks after the miscarriage to confirm it's negative and meaningful the miscarriage is over. If you haven't had a negative test yet this could be a continuation of the miscarriage as you may still have retained tissue from the pregnancy.

I'd take a test today and see if it's still positive. Are you under hospital care currently where you can call for advice? Is the flow similar to your period or miscarriage?

I had a MMC 2 years ago and I bled heavily every 7 days for a months before everything had passed.

Thank you for replying. I took a pregnancy test on Monday, still positive, but much lighter. The bleeding hasn't got heavy like a period, so must still be miscarriage bleeding, just surprised me going back to bright red blood.

No problem, if it gets really heavy again I'd get some advice but hopefully it's just the last of the bleeding and you'll test negative again soon.

I'm still bleeding red blood 5 weeks after the miscarriage, it feels like a long time! Wondering if it's normal or whether to push for another scan. I've had a negative pregnancy test this week.

@Mountainview8 Hi, I am sorry you are going through this. I have also had a miscarriage at 12 weeks without intervention and I would advise seeking medical attention for it to go back to red blood and not stop for 5 weeks I would just check everything is clear. It should take about 1-2 weeks but brown spotting etc can last a lot longer but as it is red I think it warrants calling the GP to arrange for a scan or calling your early pregnancy assessment unit if you were under there care for this pregnancy. I had my miscarriage at the hospital before they actually saw me for a scan and when they did everything was clear (no signs of a viable pregnancy as they called it) so I know I have nothing retained but if you haven't had an ultrasound since miscarrying I would definitely get it checked out. Wishing you luck ❤️

Thanks @strawberry2026 I had a scan after the miscarriage, I was booked in to the EPU to get checked out but ended up miscarrying before the appointment. They confirmed the pregnancy sack had come out but there was a small amount of retained tissue which I think came out the week after. But I have been worried there is a little bit remaining. I've contacted the EPU they won't scan me because I have a negative pregnancy test. They said to see the GP, he said they need to scan me to confirm everything has come out. Saw a doctor at the hospital yesterday, still won't scan me as I have no other symptoms just light bleeding. She gave me sone antibiotics in case there is a mild infection.

It does seem to have got less yesterday, so hoping it's finally going to stop 🤞then my periods will probably come!

@Mountainview8 oh I am so sorry you are going through this. Hopefully the antibiotics helps and you’ll feel better soon. Honestly I had a rough time with the hospital too I learned the hard way that you have to tell them what they want to hear before you actually get worse otherwise you never get the attention you need when you require it it’s always too late… if the blood is still persistent and you want peace of mind if you tell them you’re still bleeding and have pain on your right side they will give you a scan if you need to then go for it but also if the GP is saying you need a scan they can refer you for one so you could just tell your GP that and then they will get you booked in and they should give you a letter or form or something to take to the hospital. I hope it all clears up for you soon ❤️
