I’m sorry to ask this question but I think we had a mmc at 5weeks. I should be 9 weeks tomorrow.
how long does it take the body to realise the baby stopped growing?
we find out on Friday what’s happening.

Hi there.

I'm so sorry you're in this situation.
Were you scanned at the five week point?
Are your pregnancy tests negative now?

TheBroonOneAndTheWhiteOne · 08/02/2026 17:21

But to answer your question, it can take several weeks for the placenta to stop working even when the baby has died.

So…
I tested positive on a clear blue digital early response on the 29th December.
we went for a private early reassurance scan on the 25th January when I should have been 6w6d.
fetal pole measured 2.2mm, around 5w1d.
we panicked and epu got us in for a scan on the 30th January.
fetal pole measured 3.5mm they said around 6w.
They said they can’t take the private scan findings and have to go on their own. So I’m back for a scan on Friday 13th.

i don’t have many hopes because if I was 6 weeks on the 30th there’s no way I’d have had a positive on the 29th dec.

Still testing very strong positive line, but pregnancy symptoms aren’t strong

You must be so stressed. In my own experience, my body didnt realise. I miscarried at just over 6 weeks, discovered that at 8 weeks, spent weeks 9 and 10 going through the NHS process and booked in to my hospital at what would have been 12 weeks. Right up until then I was experiencing pregancy symptoms, had positive tests etc.

I think a nurse told me it could take up to 8 weeks, but they usually intervene before then. Hope you get answers soon

Omg that long
im booked for a follow up scan Friday so I’m really hoping, well I’m really hoping the measurements were off and everything is ok, but realistically it doesn’t look great with the dates not matching up. So I’m hoping they’ll be quick about it, I don’t think I could mentally deal with it much longer.
i don’t know how I’m going to get to Friday

It really is a horrible wait. Whilst I have heard lots of stories about women measuring a week behind or implanting late Im not sure how helpful they are when you're in this kind of holding state.
Fingers crossed for you, but if it isn't good news and this is the first time you've had to think about next steps after a mmc is confirmed Im happy to share experience of both options etc.

I am sorry to tell you that I was testing strongly positive right up until my miscarriage was confirmed at 14 weeks.

I had an ERPC at this point.

Yeah I’m aware you can still positive for weeks after.
I don’t have any symptoms for days then all of a sudden I’ll get a surge of symptoms then they go away again the next day.
just wish Friday would hurry up
