Hi ,

I am 40.5 years old and have a 4 year old daughter. I recently started trying for my second and got pregnant within a couple of months but also had a miscarriage at 6 weeks.

I am overweight by about 7kg (70kg) and I comfort eat a lot and can’t look at my belly fat. Should I wait to lose the weight as I know it can contribute to unhealthy pregnancy and miscarriage- or should I try as soon as my period returns? I am a comfort eater.

I’m sorry for your loss OP. At your age if you want another baby I would try asap. Although weight loss does help fertility, at age 40 your chances of a miscarriage are already 40%/pretty much 1 in 2, so your age is the bigger concern than your weight. Good luck x

When I miscarried at 39yo the midwife explained that it was highly unlikely to be anything that I had done or not done. Simply that my eggs were less and less likely to be genetically viable. By 40yo about 50% of your eggs are likely to be unable to develop into a foetus.

I did go on to have my last baby at 40yo, also while being an overweight comfort eater.

So sorry for your loss. I’m 41 and have had 2 miscarriages, likely down to egg quality. I could probably do with losing a stone, but the miscarriage clinic were relatively unconcerned as my BMI is still well under 30. The tips they did give were 600mg of coq10 a day, vitamin D3, Omega3 and to cut out alcohol as much as possible. I’ve also shifted my diet to being more fruit and veg heavy and reduced processed food and red meat. Might make a difference, might not but it’s worth a go.

i think at this age a big part comes down to luck, and I wish you lots of it.
