Retained product - medicine or surgery?

I miscarried naturally when I should have been between 11-12 weeks. Didn't come as a shock as the pregnancy was measuring 2 weeks behind 4 weeks earlier (had no scans in between).

3 weeks after the loss I was still testing positive. Retained product of around 2cm was seen on the scan. I was given the option of waiting to see if it came out with my period, take medicine or have surgery. I went with waiting.

Fast forward to now, the tissue is still there, no smaller (estimated 2 - 2.5cm this time). I've had no bleeding in between so the only reason we know it's there is from the scans and still testing positive for HCG.

This is 8, going on 9 weeks since I miscarried so it's really dragging now. What would you do? It seems unusual to be in this position - most people seem to have a D&C for MMC but I've passed most of the pregnancy naturally, it's just the last bit that isn't going on its own. Would you try medicine first or just go for the surgery now?

Anyone had a similar experience with retained tissue? Eager to hear experiences to help me decide.🙂

I was in a similar situation and opted for the medicine first then did not need the D&C. I personally felt like the D&C was too much on my body if I didn’t need it. The medicine worked and my test was negative after 3 weeks.

so sorry you’re going through this!

@lollypops2303 thanks for your thoughts!
Was the timescale similar for you? I'm just wondering if it hasn't come out in 9 weeks, will drugs be enough!🤔 and did you have a period before you took the medicine and it passed? They seemed quite sure it was likely to come away with that but it hasn't.

I didn’t, I was in hospital when I miscarried so I had the option to wait but opted straight for medicine and the remaining tissue pretty much came away the next morning

Wanted to update this, in case anyone else is ever in my position and finds this helpful!

On Sunday I started having my second period since my miscarriage. It started with a clot. I felt hopeful this was the RPOC. Today I've had a scan to confirm that it was and all tissue left has now gone. So it has taken 9 weeks but my body has got rid of the RPOC on its own finally!
